Dorothy Lucille Froland
May 16th, 1937 – October 28th, 2025
Dorothy Lucille Froland, age 88, of Dayton, MN passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 28th, 2025 after a 2 1/2-year battle with cancer. Dorothy was able to remain at home surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born May 16th, 1937, in Echo, MN. Daughter of Albert and Louise (Cole) Akre. At the age of 20, from 1957-1958, Dorothy worked for North Central Airlines in public relations. She would also fill in for the President's secretary when she was away. Dorothy used her perks to book the airfare, hotel, and car for her upcoming honeymoon and then quit her job and married Don Froland on June 28, 1958. Dorothy and Don had known each other since they were small children, as their dads were friends. From 1959 to 1963, she worked at the Bob Johnson Law Firm as Bob's secretary. Don was drafted into the Army at Fort Riley, Kansas, so she lived with her parents in Granite Falls. In 1961, she gave birth to their firstborn, Anthony (Tony) Arnold Froland. When he was born, she moved on base and worked in the Army JAG office writing wills for the soldiers being sent to Vietnam. Don's service ended in 1962, and they moved back to Minnesota, where she was able to return to employment at the law firm. In 1963, they moved to 'the cities' as they called it, and she went to work for Reynolds Guyer, a large advertising company that worked with many well-known names – Milton Bradley, Pillsbury, Parker Brothers, etc. One perk for Dorothy was she was one of the first to test out the famous Twister game before it was released to the public. In 1965, they had their second born, Julie Kay Froland. In 1968, Reynolds Guyer put Julie in a commercial with Clancey and Carmen. Dorothy left the company in 1969 and then became a real estate agent with Spring Realty. At the same time, her husband, Don, started Superior Iron, Inc. From 1969 to 1974, she sold real estate and did the books for Superior Iron. In 1975, she went full-time with Don at the family business until they sold the company and both retired in 1999. Dorothy treasured her three grandchildren born 1990, 1995, and 1998. She was able to take care of them and had the play pens and everything they needed right in the office. After retirement, she and Don were able to care for their oldest and second-to-youngest great-grandchild, and they loved it! Dorothy loved helping others in need, including many friends of their kids growing up. She loved family trips in the motorhomes, starting in 1972 which included – but was not limited to – seven trips to Disney and twenty trips to Arizona. Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Donald J. Froland; two children, Anthony (Carrie) Froland, Julie Froland, both of Elk River; three grandchildren: Travis (Alyssa), Jordan, and Jalon (Haley); Five great-grandchildren, Kalvin, Hazelle, Dallas, Braxten, and Armanni; Sister, Sharon (Ed) Lynch of Inver Grove Heights; brother, Leslie (Barb) Akre of Monroe, North Carolina; other relatives and many friends. Preceded in death by her parents, sisters Arlene Conrad and Jeanette Kissner, and by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ole and Wilsie Froland. A time of gathering will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 PM on Friday November 14th at Peterson Chapel, St. Michael-Albertville Funeral Home. A memorial service begins at 3:00 PM with meal to follow.
