Dorothy Hartman-Diggle Obituary

Dorothy Hartman-Diggle

EASTHAMPTON, MA - Dorothy (Bunny) Hartman-Diggle passed away on Wednesday October 22, 2025, in Northampton surrounded by her family. She was born in Patterson, New Jersey and moved to Western Massachusetts at the age of six. She attended Easthampton public schools and, in sixth grade, met her future husband, William Diggle.

She graduated from Easthampton High School in 1971. Dorothy went on to earn her Bachelor's degree in history and a Master's degree in education. The bulk of her teaching career was spent in Springfield, as creating educational opportunities for urban young people was important to her. She was an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts and finished her career as a Principal at Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion School in Hadley.

Dorothy was a voracious reader and lover of the arts, frequently taking her two children, Carey Mandeville of Sebring, Florida, and Lucas Diggle of Bradford, Vermont to local museums and trips to surrounding New England states. She is survived by her husband William, her two children, her daughter-in-law Jessica Lange, and four adoring grandchildren, Owen, Adler, Arthur, and Arrow Diggle all of Bradford, Vermont. At Dorothy's request all services will be private and she will be interred in Brookside Cemetery, Easthampton at a private ceremony.

Earlier today

Dorothy will be missed by many people. She was a great teacher to all of her students. It was a wonderful experience to know her at both Chestnut and PVCICS.

Yesterday

I was so sad to learn this today. I would like to credit Mrs. Hartman for gifting me my interest in studying history as without her I would not have given it a chance. Additionally, she encouraged me to give American history a try, which I did and would never have done without her suggestion. It is now my major and one of my biggest passions.

I additionally would not have survived Middle school nor the transition into High school without her as she helped me navigate everything from my anxiety to relationship issues. While an angsty teenager at times, I do hope she knows I appreciated everything she did.

Thoughts and prayers to the family and may she rest in peace

Yesterday

I was sad to hear of Dorothy's passing. She was a great person to work with and I credit her with helping me get my foot in the door at PVCICS where I now teach high school history and coach the cross-country team, which are both career highlights for me. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Yesterday

Bunny was one of my oldest, dearest friends, going back to Holyoke Community College in the early '70's. She was the smartest and funniest person I ever knew. We shared so many memories, especially in the last few years during our frequent trips to NYC. I will miss her terribly. Sincere condolences to her family.
