Dorothy Iona Hayes Ivie, age 88, of Duchesne, passed away peacefully at her home, on December 15, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, compassion and charismatic grace that touched countless lives.
Dorothy was born June 27, 1937 in Tabiona, Utah to William Charles and Isabel Gines Hayes. She grew up alongside her siblings.
She married the love of her life, Verl Jake Ivie on August 16, 1955. He died January 21, 1991. Together with his children, Carolyn, Hal, Dennis “Bink”, Douglas, and Deborah, they built a home founded on unwavering love, which soon welcomed five cherished children, Pat, Tony, Terry, Larry, Verl R., Jr, Angie and Mike.
Their eternal devotion was solemnized when they were sealed in The Provo Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on July 29, 1988.
Dorothy was the epitome of compassion and patience. Her remarkable charisma drew people in, and her boundless energy was channeled into decades of service.
She was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served faithfully in several callings, including as a worker at the Vernal, Utah Temple. She fulfilled a lifelong dream serving as a missionary in the Auckland New Zealand Mission from August 1999 to January 2001.
For 26 years, Dorothy dedicated herself to mentoring young lives as a foster grandparent. Her strength, wisdom, and gentle guidance nurtured generations, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of the children and families she served.
Dorothy’s greatest passion was working in her yard and garden where she spent every waking hour tending to it in the summer. Her spirit will forever live on through her 239 grandchildren, each a testament to the powerful, matriarchal love she poured out so freely.
Dorothy was a woman whose every action was a lesson in the unconditional love. Her strength, spicy spirit and unwavering love will continue to inspire and comfort all who were blessed to know her.
She is survived by her children, Carolyn, Hal, Dennis”Bink”, Douglas, Deborah, Pat, Tony, Terry, Larry, Verl R, Jr., Angie (Robbie) and Mike (Rebecca), and 239 grand, great-grand and great-great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Verl, children, Carolyn, Dennis, Kathy, her siblings, Wilma O’driscoll, Opal Ledbetter, Emmett Hayes, Leora Hayes and their spouses, her beloved grandchildren, Brittany, Jason, Ryan, Kevin, Jeff and Brandon.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 22, 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Duchesne 1st & 3rd Ward Chapel. Viewings will be held on Sunday evening from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the church and Monday from 9:30 -10:45 AM.
Burial will be in the Strawberry Cemetery.
