Dorothy Evelyn May, 94, passed away on August 16, 2023, in San Saba, TX.  She was born on May 7, 1929, to John and Virginia Hardy of Red Bluff Community.

Visitation will be held at Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel on Saturday, August 19, 2023, from 6 to 8 pm.  Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church Lometa on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at 2 pm with interment to follow at Chadwick Cemetery.

Dorothy was raised on the Hardy Ranch where she continued to live after marriage and where she raised her children.  Her first seven years of education was in a two-room country schoolhouse.  The drinking water was supplied by a rock cistern with one faucet which the children shared with a community dipper.  The water supply for this was rain.  One room in the school taught grades 1-4, the second room taught grades 5-8.  Each room had four rows of seats, a row for each grade and one teacher for all grade levels.  Each class had to sit through the lessons of the other three grades.  At the time the highest level of education taught was through elementary.  In order to get a high school diploma they had to transfer to Lometa.  When school buses entered the picture, the entire school of Chadwick was transferred to Lometa, ending the country school.

Dorothy was married to Allen May of San Saba and had three children, James, Carl, and David.  She was widowed at the age of 34 and then entered nursing school in San Saba at the age of 40.  She was one of the two chosen  by the nursing supervisor for employment at the hospital and she worked 14 years until the hospital closed.  Later she worked for Home Health Agency's for maintenance and post hospital care.  Dorothy held Blood Pressure clinics in Senior Citizen Centers for many years after serving San Saba, Copperas Cove, Lampasas, Goldthwaite and Lometa.  Lometa was serviced the longest, even into her retirement years.  The Lometa Center was serviced for 41 years and was sponsored by the Lometa Lions Club.  She also worked at many health fairs.  She obtained two outstanding service awards from the San Saba Hospital and was awarded the Woman of the Year in 1979 from the Lometa Lions Club and Employee of the month at the Senior Citizens Center in 2012.

She was preceded in death by her husband Allen in 1964; her brothers, Ethan Hardy, James Hardy, and Foy Hardy; her grandson, Wayne May and granddaughters, Elizabeth May and Jessica May.

She is survived by her sons, James May and wife Mary Joy, Carl May and wife Deborah, and David May and wife Suzette; 13 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
