Dorothy Millette Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 28, 2025.
Dorothy Ann Millette (née Leary) passed away at her home in Eastham, MA on September 25, 2025 at the age of 92. She was surrounded by loved ones.

Dot was born in Burlington, Vermont on October 19, 1932, the youngest daughter of 8 children born to Moses Luke Leary and Lena (Chapman) Leary.

She began her formal education at the age of 4 at Mt. St. Mary's Academy, graduating with honors from Trinity College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and French. Her parents prioritized education and it was a source of great pride that Dot and all of her 7 siblings received college degrees.

Dot married Edward William Millette, Jr. on June 26, 1954. They were college sweethearts who met on a blind date.

Dot and Ed built a close-knit family, raising 4 children in Western Massachusetts. Dot taught English, French and Latin at Cathedral High School and Ursuline Academy in Springfield, MA. After spending many summers on Cape Cod, they moved the family to Eastham in 1976. She taught Latin in the Gifted and Talented program at Nauset Regional Middle School, before becoming a dental assistant to Dr. Arthur Hartung in Eastham, MA. She worked with Art for 20 years.

Dot was bright, kind, and tolerant, and many people were drawn to her. She listened well and reserved judgement. She was fun to be with and had a great sense of humor. She loved to swim, ride her bike and walk the National Seashore beaches, and she read extensively. She enjoyed a good meal.

Throughout her long life, Dot took great comfort in her Catholic faith. At one time, she was a daily communicant at St. Joan of Arc Parish in Orleans, MA. She taught CCD and was a Eucharistic Minister.

For more than 50 years, she managed Type I diabetes and heart disease with regimented exercise, precision and grace.

She will be sadly missed.

Dot is survived by her four children and their partners: Marianne Millette-Kelley, Edward W. Millette III (Sharon L. Ostrowski), Elizabeth Millette Holman (James E. Holman), Margaret Millette-Loomis (Glenn H. Loomis); seven grandchildren and their spouses, Ellen Lena Leonard (Christopher Leonard), John Leary Loomis (Victoria Barnham), Kate Elizabeth Holman, Emma Schneider, Abigail May Kelley, Edward William Millette Loomis and Edward Joseph Millette; one great grandchild, Francis Henry Leonard, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
