Dorothy M. Nelson, 96, of Woodhull, Illinois passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at her home. Cremation rites will be accorded. A visitation will be held Wednesday, February 7, 2024 from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home in Woodhull. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. She was born May 2, 1927 in Woodhull, Illinois to Fredrick “Brink” and Francis Johnson Nelson. Dorothy was a graduate from Woodhull High School. She married Donald A. Nelson on September 4, 1945 in the Clover Chapel Church. They were married for 61 years. She worked as a Secretary for the Mental Health Center in Galesburg for many years and was a farm wife as well.
Dorothy was a member of the Clover Chapel Church where she played piano for many years. She was also a member of the Miles S. Sturgeon American Legion Auxiliary Post #546. Dorothy loved playing cards and giving piano lessons to many people. She enjoyed bowling, reading, going to Circa 21, travelling and dancing. She was an avid Chicago Bears and Cubs fan.
Survivors include two daughters, Sherry (Bill) Griffin of Galesburg, Illinois and Deb Jensen of Woodhull; one son, Rick (Julie) Nelson of Columbia, South Carolina; 6 grandchildren: Stephanie, Chris, Sam, Sarah, Catherine, Matthew; fourteen great-grandchildren: Molly, Sadie, Addie, Madison, Piper, Gracie, Garrett, William, Henry, Cooper, Charley, Owen, Ryan and Rose.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one granddaughter, Hilary; one sister, Darlene Waugh; one brother, Dale Nelson; and son-in-law, Jim Jensen.
