Dorothy Powers Obituary

Published by Legacy on Dec. 3, 2025.
Dorothy Anne (Schmidt) Powers was born to Albert and Mary (Epp) Schmidt on June 12, 1936, near Waldheim, Saskatchewan, Canada. The family moved to St. Catharines, Ontario during World War II, and after returning for a time to Saskatchewan, they relocated in 1946 to Huron, South Dakota where her father was the first pastor of Bethesda Church. A few years later, the family moved to Omaha, Nebraska where Dorothy attended high school. For her senior year she attended Central Christian High School in Hutchinson, Kansas, graduating in 1954.
In 1956 she married Clyde Sullivan and lived in Holdrege, Nebraska where they had three sons together. After their marriage ended in divorce, they relocated to Southern California. She then married Jerry Powers with whom she had one son.
Dorothy was a life-long nurse. As a teen, she worked as a nursing assistant in Omaha and began her training. In 1969 she graduated from nursing school in Southern California and became a registered nurse, working in critical care. She later worked at the VA in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After her retirement, she helped family members and friends recuperate from surgery and illness.
Dorothy enjoyed singing hymns, reading, gardening, cooking for her family, and telling stories of her childhood. She loved her family dearly. She was fond of all kinds of animals, especially dogs, cats, and eagles. She loved the Lord and attended Bethesda Church of Huron before moving to Northfield.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Mary and Albert Schmidt, her sister Ellen Tschetter, and her brothers Dennis Schmidt and Robert Schmidt. She is survived by her sister Marjorie Halstead; her sons: Brian Sullivan, Kevin Sullivan (Carol), Corey Sullivan, and Thomas Powers (Sandra); her grandchildren: Brent, Darrin, Daryl, Nicholas, Soren, and Vaughn; her great-grandchildren: Hunter, Wyatt, and Milania; and her beloved niece, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.
A celebration of Dorothy's Life will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 24, 2025 at the Northfield Retirement Community Chapel with visitation held from 9-10 AM. In lieu of flowers, she wished for donations to be made to Samaritan's Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
