Doug was really something. My parents breathed be ball for many decades. He was drafted in 1934 by Yankees on a farm team. They MUST have known of him.
Doug was rare and pure in his baseball career.

Dear Joy,
What a wonderful and kind man Doug was. Doug and my father, Earl Lennon, were friends and colleagues for many years. In all the time they knew each other my father spoke almost reverently of the skill Doug had as an umpire - Doug. never made a bad call! He was the rarest of men, managing his career and sharing with the world an indomitable unforgettable smile I hope that he and Dad are calling balls and strikes in Heaven.

Hi Joy,

This is the 3rd time I've tried to send this note of condolence and hopefully THIS ONE will get thru. I am not a digital whiz.
Diane and I were saddened to hear of Doug's passing and we both had the utmost respect for him. We always enjoyed seeing you both at off-season baseball functions in the San Diego area an Diane always enjoyed talking with you.
My former Padres roommate catcher Bob Barton passed two days after Doug and I can only imagine the conversation the two of them are having.
My favorite Doug story was one night circa 1971 he was umpiring 2nd base and I was the Padres 2nd baseman. Between innings he asked me how I was doing and I said great but 'how come every time a pitcher throws me a low and away slider I can't reach you call it a strike and say it just caught the outside part of the plate at the knees'? I then added that never seems to be a strike on Hank Aaron or Willie Mays. He thought for a couple of seconds and said, 'No son, they just stand closer to the plate so they CAN reach that pitch.'. I'm STILL not convinced this was true but I was left speechless and had no comeback..
We've all entered the 'glide path of life now' and memories become more important with each passing day. May God Bless both you and your family and please know that more than a great umpire, Doug was a great man.
Sincerely, Dave and Diane Campbell

RIP Doug Harvey. Thank you for helping to add integrity to the game of baseball. While some players have tarnished the game, I always believed the umpires did the best they could. God bless your family and friends with comfort and peace. I grew up with you, Ed Vargo, Harry Wendelstedt, etc. and I miss all of you. Ball 4 Doug, take your walk to the Gates of Heaven.

So sorry to learn of Doug's passing. He was everything the article said in terms of his umpiring career. He was also a great guy and I enjoyed knowing him.
Kindest Regards,
