Douglas Eugene Baker
September 7, 1950 to March 11, 2024
Douglas Eugene Baker passed away on March 11, 2024. He was 73 years old. Born in San Francisco to World War II bombardier Jess Francis Baker and English teacher Elizabeth Kingston, Doug spent his early years traveling the world - Nevada, Morocco, the Philippines, Hawaii, and later Southern Arizona. He often spoke longingly about his days as a member of the Southern Unit Surf Club in Honolulu or skipping school to hike Mount Lemmon with a six pack and some friends. After high school, he spent time bouncing around the Pacific Northwest as a student, cherry picker, and lumberjack before settling on 40 acres outside Sierra Vista, AZ and beginning a masonry business with his best friend.
Always a lover of rhythm & blues and rock & roll, Doug spent several decades playing guitar in bands with an evolving cast of characters. He was a lifelong fan of the San Francisco Giants and passed his love of baseball on to all four of his children - watching, cheering for, and even sometimes coaching their teams. He had a deep love for Southern Arizona and it's history, took pleasure in feeding the birds, and loved the monsoon season. He was an optimistic idealist, a hippy, an avid reader, and an incredible story teller. Doug was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother, and many close friends. He is survived by his four children, Chad (Gina), Jessica (Lance), Olivia, and Matthew; three grandchildren, Jackson, Reagan, and Elise; and his partner of over 20 years, Jeannie McKinney.
