Douglas Richard Bates, 81, of Hedgesville, WV passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

He was born on April 19, 1944, in Morristown, New Jersey to the late Charles Howell Bates, Jr. and Helen Alma Coleman Bates.

He was the devoted husband of Linda Diane (Leister) Bates.

Surviving are his brother Charles Bates, and wife Penny from Sussex, NJ, sister Diana Ashman and husband Tom from Naples, FL. Daughters Rene Bates Drake from Landing, NJ, Debra Bates from High Point, NC, and Jennifer Bates from Mechanicsburg, PA, 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, 3 nieces and 1 nephew.

Douglas was a graduate of Parsippany high school. He then served in the US Marines achieving the rank of E-1.

He was a long time, self employed over the road truck driver until he retired.

He was a long time member of the Blue and Gray Model T Ford Club, the Hearts of Maryland Model T Ford Club, the Model T Ford Club of America and the Model T Ford Club International.

He proudly drove his beautiful 1922 Model T Ford on many, many tours throughout the United States, and many many parades.

He enjoyed watching Nascar racing on Sunday, and our rescue Cocker Spaniel, Buddy.

He enjoyed taking care of his property and his home, and tinkering around in his garage.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 AM on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will follow at 11 AM with Pastor Mark Waddell officiating. Interment will follow in Highland View Cemetery, Berrett (Sykesville), MD.
