I always liked when Doug would be deep into an explanation of something, and then he’d push his wheelchair into the wall to straighten out his feet.
It’s funny the things you remember

To Doug's family and friends:

My favorite memories of Doug are: "dancing" with him and his wheel chair at a concert, watching him give gleeful children rides on his lap in his chair at Minicon, sharing foods at bidding parties at science fiction conventions(one bite for him, one bite for me),and just talking, talking, talking. He was a lovely man and we are all richer for having known him. Sweet dreams, Doug.

I've known Doug wince I moved to Minneapolis 30 years ago. He has been kind and generous with his time, energy and money. I will miss seeing him in the future and I am sorry I was unable to be there Saturday to talk with you directly.

I've known Doug over 30 years, from the fellow with the somewhat odd walk to the fellow in the wheelchair on oxygen at the most recent MINICON. We celebrated his last birthday in a hospital room. I had been hoping to celebrate many more. I admired his strength and often enjoyed touring the somewhat seedier sides of cities around the world with him. He is missed tremendously!

Dear Friuf Family:
I am sorry to hear about your loss. Doug was a kind and gentle man who I am proud to have met. Knowing Doug, laughing with Doug and being in his presence was an honor. He was kinder than many, and stronger than most. I will miss hearing his stories, his laughter, and his jokes. You have my deepest sympathy during this difficult time and throughout your mourning. I only wish I could have been at the memorial to send him off. Unfortunately, I learned of his passing far too late today.

I enjoyed seeing Doug so many times at Minicon, usually surrounded by a group of chattering science fiction fans. I am sure I will continue to see him, just out of the corner of my eye.

To the Friauf Family,
I was lucky enough to know Doug through our work at Musicland. He always had a smile on his face. He loved to talk about all the movies and his science fiction interest. Know now that Doug is able to move freely throughout the world and travel to all the sites he couldn't in life. Doug always showed everyone such strength and determination and fought such a couragous battle. May god bless your family.

Sadly, I just recieved this information. I was out of town all last week, and was saddened to hear of Doug's death. I remember his love of movies, and recall fondly our poking fun at a Block E security guard who thought Doug was trying to cause trouble. I didn't see him as much as I would have liked to, but he was loved by a great many people.

To the Friauf Family,
Doug was such a wonderful person to get to know. I worked with him for many years at Musicland. His strength and determination to fight this disease amazed me each and every day. Know now he is now free from the life he struggled with all those years. May he have peace and travel the universe to all the places he dreamed of. He will be missed by everyone he touched in his short life.

Doug was a warm, kind, friendly guy. I always enjoyed his company when I lived in Minneapolis in the '80s, and I was glad to see him at Minicons and Worldcons since that time.

My memories are of a gentle soul. They just don't come any better than Doug. I sure am going to miss him.

Doug, you were one of the bravest people I ever knew. The trips you took, the sights you saw, the adventures you had, all complicated by a failing body, made a deep impression on me. I'll miss you a lot. I'm proud to have known you for so long.
