Douglas Herbert Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carpenter's Funeral Home - Corning on Mar. 7, 2026.
Douglas M. Herbert, 77, passed away peacefully at his home in Campbell, New York, on March 5, 2026, surrounded by the place he loved most. Born on March 6, 1948, in Corning, New York, he was the son of Martin and Alice (Payne) Herbert.

Douglas was a proud graduate of Campbell Central School, Class of 1968. Shortly after graduation, he answered the call to serve his country. Drafted into the Army and later enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, Douglas faithfully served from 1968 to 1972 during the Vietnam Conflict. He later served 12 years in the Navy Reserves. His dedication to his fellow veterans and his country remained an important part of his life long after his military service ended.

On June 5, 1971, he married the love of his life, Jackie Ackley. Together they built a life centered around family, loyalty, and community.

Douglas worked for several organizations throughout his life, including M&K in Hornell and Sun Masters in Painted Post, where he was known for his hard work and reliability. Outside of work, he devoted much of his time to supporting veterans and the organizations that served them. He was a Gold Legacy Member of the VFW and remained deeply involved throughout his life. Douglas proudly served as a three-time Southern Tier County Council Commander and spent three years as District Five Department of New York Commander. He was also a past National Aide-de-Camp. He was a member of Hornell VFW Post 2250, the Marine Corps League, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and the Military Order of the Cooties Pup Tent NY032. In addition, he was a registered member of the Appalachian American Indians of West Virginia.

In his younger years, he was an avid hunter and fisherman and greatly enjoyed the outdoors.

Those who knew Douglas will remember his dedication to family, his pride in his service, and his strong commitment to helping fellow veterans.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jackie Herbert of Campbell; his daughters, Tammy Herbert of Campbell and Melanie "Mel" (David) Prisella of Corning; his grandchildren, Sabrina Prisella, Samantha Prisella, Seth Herbert, and Cheyenne Herbert; and his great-grandsons, Lee Hills and Domenico Prisella. He is also survived by his siblings, Donald (Linda) Herbert of Campbell and Vonda (Michael) Smith of Campbell; and his four legged companions: Semper Fi and Rascal, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Douglas was predeceased by his brothers, Thomas Adderly, George Adderly, and LeRoy Adderly.

Though he may be gone from our sight, his dedication to family, his service to his country, and his commitment to his fellow veterans will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.

There will be no public services. Arrangements have been entrusted to Carpenter's Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the VFW National Home for Children or a local SPCA in his honor.
