Douglas Howell Obituary

Howell, Jr., Douglas

Oct 10, 1934 - Jan 14, 2025

Douglas Wister Howell, Jr., 90, died January 14, 2025 in Bryan, Texas. He was born October 10, 1934, in Bryan, the third of four children of the late Douglas Wister Howell and Olive Emory Howell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sue Jouvenat Howell; his son, Joel Victor Howell; and his sisters, Ann Howell Giraud and Wister Howell Kampmann.

Douglas is survived by his son, Douglas Wister Howell, III. He is also survived by his sister, Ellen Howell Myers and her husband, William Allen Myers and their son, Webb Myers, all of San Antonio. In addition, he is survived by his nephew, George Kampmann, Jr., of San Antonio; and his niece, Ann Kampmann Schneider, of Vanderpool.

Douglas was a member of the class of 1951 at Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan, graduating when he was 16 years old. He attended the University of Texas when, in 1954, he was accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. He graduated in 1957 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He earned his wings and piloted the B-47 Stratojet strategic bomber during the height of the Cold War.

While in the Air Force, Douglas developed a heart condition and was granted a medical discharge, retiring with the rank of Captain. In 1967, he returned to Texas with his family to enter Baylor Law School, and graduated in December 1969. In 1970, he began his law career in Bryan in the law office of A.W. "Head" Davis, Jr., and later opened his own practice, with a focus on Real Estate, Wills and Trusts. He retired from the practice of law in 1996. In retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and swimming laps at the Bryan Aquatic Center.

A brief graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the Bryan City Cemetery.
