Douglas Harold Hughes, age 82 of Corning, NY passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at Absolut Care of Three Rivers. He was born on February 8, 1942 in Corning, NY to Harold and Marie Hughes.
Throughout his career as a survey engineer, Douglas helped build many of the essential bridges throughout Steuben County. Aside from this, he had a deep passion for the natural life, often using his incredible artistic abilities to capture the beauty he saw in every living creature. Douglas was a compassionate man when it came to animals and held his home open to rescues and strays. He passes his knowledge and love of the outdoors on to his grandchildren, who he often taught lessons to in fishing, as well as captured the moments of their youth through his infamous home videos.
Douglas is survived by his daughter, Susan Shaner of Newark, Delaware, and sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Christie Kerwan of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, James and Robin Kerwan of Bradford and Thomas and Lynnette Kerwan of Big Flats; grandchildren, David, Ayla, Patrick, McKenna, Peyton, Jessyka, Zachary, Hillary, Abbygale, Roni, Emma and Lily; five great-grandchildren, brother-in-law, John Vanderhoef of Campbell, two nephews, Charlie and Joey and daughter-in-law, Debra Kerwan and son-in- law, Ronald Shaner.
In addition to his parents, Douglas was predeceased by his wife, Lois and his sister, Audrey Pane.
It was Douglas's wish that there be no services. Carpenter's Funeral Home, Corning, NY 14830 has been
entrusted with the arrangements.
