Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Friday, March 28, 2025, Douglas Jerome Salter, Sr., 87, loving husband of the late Emma Ruth “Mama Ruth” Salter.
Douglas was a lifelong native of Augusta, GA. He served in the United States Navy for 10 years and the Army Reserves for 25 years. He spent 25+ years working with the Martinez Fire Department. He retired from the Dental College of GA as a lab technician. He was affectionately known as “Papa Smurf” by his grandkids.
Family members include his daughter: Cheryl Ann Ross and Sandra Bradford (Ralph); son: Douglas Jerome Salter, Jr. (Annette); grandchildren: Mary Salter, Caitlyn Salter (Brandon Sapp), Lauren Salter, Justin Salter, Crystal Glosser, and Richelle Chapple; great-grandson: Manuel Salgado; niece: Robin Monaco; nephew: Bobby Salter, Jr. (Helouise); and daughter-in-law: Tiffany Salter. In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his parents, Chrystal and Susie Salter, brother, Bobby Salter, and sister, Mickey Salter.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, April 6, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park. The pallbearers will be Brandon Sapp, Manuel Salgado, Gino Saponari, David Parks, Grant Harbin and Toby Eacho.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tri My Best Inc., or runsignup.com/race/GA/Augusta/trimybesttriathlon, or directly to the organization’s Venmo account: @trimybest (last 4 digits of the phone number 6074).
