He is survived by four of their children: Monica Simmons, Douglas (Tamika) Simmons Jr., Anthony Duane (Natasha) Simmons, and Juan Simmons, all of Savannah, Georgia. He is also survived by his children Mary (Gregory) Nelson of New York; Cerinzio (Heidi) Williams of Seattle, Washington; and Vanessa Roberts (Delon) Key of Aiken, South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Willie Lou Bates; his son, Everette Dexter Simmons; and two grandchildren, Willie Cobb and Martrell Moody.

He leaves to cherish his memory four brothers: J.C. Simmons of Atlanta, Georgia; Leroy (Corine) Simmons, Albert (Rosenia) Simmons, and Willie James (Ellen) Simmons, all of Aiken, South Carolina; and two sisters, Jennie L. Simmons and Henrietta Crawford, both of Aiken, South Carolina. He also leaves behind a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
