I just can't believe Doug is gone.

I first met Doug in the early eighties when I was interested in risk adjustment in critically ill patients and the APACHE score was just coming out. I was impressed by how gracious, kind, and supportive he was for a new investigator. Many future interactions during the SUPPORT study and as colleagues at UVa just confirmed that Doug was the same to me as he was to everyone: a remarkably open, straightforward, kind and considerate man who knew his worth but had a humility and simplicity about him that endeared him to everyone who knew him.

What a loss to us all. My heart goes out to Lauren and Wyatt. Doug loved you both very much.

We have all lost a good friend and a good man.
