Doyle Cain Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 9, 2026.
Doyle was born in Monroe County, Indiana to Rev. Doyle and Irene (Smith) Cain. His life began in Smithville and other than a couple of brief periods of time, he has always lived in Monroe County. He started school in Smithville and then went to Rogers Elementary for a while before his family moved to Ellettsville for the rest of his school years. He graduated from Edgewood High School in 1966. Doyle worked in construction with his dad while still in school and continued after he graduated.

He went into the Army in 1968 and served three years of active duty. First in basic training in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky then to Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland for more training. Doyle served two tours of duty overseas while in the Army, first in Thailand then later he was in Danang, Vietnam. He came home in February 1971 and a month later, on March 5, 1971, he married Paula Skirvin. Their son, Christopher, was born in 1978.

Doyle continued to work with his dad, and later his brother Randall, for several years after his military service. In 1980 he went to work for Will-Harris Builders and later became part owner. He retired from Will-Harris in 2004.

Doyle faced a lot of challenges in the past few years, especially recent months, but met them all with strength and bravery. Chris and I are so grateful and proud to have shared our lives with this kind and loving man.

Doyle was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Earl and Earmel, sisters Kathleen Felton and Bonnie Hillenburg.

He is survived by his wife Paula, son Christopher, brother Randall, all of Bloomington, and sister Susie Glasgow of Brownstown. Also, several nieces and nephews.

Doyle requested no funeral services. He will be cremated and buried in Burgoon Cemetery at a later date. A Celebration of Life is being planned for later in the Spring.
