Dr. John W. Plyler, 67, a devoted husband, son, brother, and celebrated physician, passed away at his home in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, on November 5, 2025. Born on November 28, 1957, in Lancaster, South Carolina, to the late, William Elliott Plyler, Sr. and Nannie Louise Williams Plyler. Dr. Plyler's life was marked by a commitment to healthcare and the community he served.
He earned his undergraduate degree at the College of Charleston before furthering his education at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where he completed medical school, his residency, and a fellowship. Dr. Plyler's career included a faculty position at MUSC and the establishment of his private practice, Charleston Neurology. He had over forty years of experience, specializing in neurology and sleep medicine. Dr. Plyler was known for his dedication to his patients and his role in advancing neurological care in the region.
Dr. Plyler is survived by his loving husband, Thomas "Tommy" E. Ozmore; and his brothers,William Elliott Plyler, Jr. (Frances) of Columbia, SC and Gary Charles Plyler (Holly) of Summerville, SC; brother-in-law, Greg Ozmore (Julie); and sisters-in-law, Amy Claxton (Sam), and Beth Fournier (Scott). His legacy will live on through his nieces and nephews, Layna, Annalee, Jackson, Hampton (Madison), Malarie (Robbie), Brittany (Tyler), Kristina (John), Malcolm (Kendra), Scotty, Jake, Will, Emma, as well as ten great nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on November 15, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at J. Henry Stuhr Mount Pleasant, located at 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM, with an interment at Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
Memorials may be made in Dr. Plyler's honor to Agape Care Group Hospice at acghospice.com.
