Dr. Phil Powers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 5 to Mar. 13, 2024.
Dr. Phillip David "Doc" Powers, age 75, passed away peacefully in his home in Port O'Connor, Texas on Monday, March 4, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

Doc was born in Spirit Lake, Iowa on July 16, 1948 to Glen and Irene (Nelson) Powers. After graduating from Indianola High School in Iowa, he completed his undergraduate degree at Eastern New Mexico University before attending Logan College of Chiropractic in St Louis, Missouri. After graduation, he moved to Tucumcari where he cared for patients, his family and the community for more than 25 years before moving to Las Vegas, NM where he continued to practice for 10 more years.

Dr. Powers served on the Tucumcari school board, Tucumcari Area Vocational School board, volunteered as a Cub Scouts master, was involved in both the Lion's and Elk's clubs, served on the Tucumcari zoning and planning commission and volunteered as the PRCA Rodeo Chairman in Tucumcari. Doc was also a member of the American Legion at his second home at Conchas Lake.

A man of many talents, he spent time farming, building and remodeling homes, restoring old cars and motorcycles, flying airplanes, singing, playing the guitar, banjo and piano, spending time on the boat fishing, riding Harleys, snow skiing, water skiing, racing dirt bikes in his younger years and a host of other hobbies. Most of all, he cherished sharing his life's adventures with the love of his life and soulmate, Diana, and spending time with his children and grandchildren who were his pride and joy.

God was always at the center of Doc's life and he referred to Jesus Christ as his partner. He had a heart of gold and would give the shirt of his back to help anyone. He had lifelong friends and never met a stranger. He played the role of both parents to his children, never missing an activity or sporting event they were involved in. His children called him every Mother's Day to wish him a Happy Mother's Day and did the same on Father's Day.

He will be remembered as humble, warm, and caring with a servant heart and fierce loyalty to his friends and family.

Phil is survived by his loving wife, Diana, his four children, Shawn (Dena) Powers of McKinleyville, California, Dawn (Chris) Duhon of Lucas, Texas, Lana (Chris) Jasper of Prosper, Texas and Phillip (Misty) Powers of Lubbock, Texas, 11 Grandchildren, Father-In-Law A.W. Orthman, brothers Doug Powers of Tucumcari, NM and Steve (Roxanne) Davis of Fallon, Nevada, and Brother-in-law Randy Schuster of Pendaries, NM, along with 7 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving Sister, Pamela Schuster, parents, Glen and Irene Powers, Mother-in-law Edith Orthman, and Niece Stephanie Davis.

He will be missed tremendously by all who loved him. To live in the hearts of those who loved you is to never die. The Powers family would like to thank Doc's Niece, Natalie Schuster, for helping the family so much during this difficult time.

A celebration of life memorial will be held at 1pm on Monday, March 11th, 2024 at the First Baptist Church in Tucumcari, 321 E Center Street.

Prayers to the family! I remember Doc having this excaliber car he was really proud of and would talk to us kids about how fast it was. Joking around i told him that our dually pickup would out run that thing he would laugh. One day a friend and i were cruising and there was doc in his car so we pulled up next to him and finally talked him into racing us and wellll to his surprise we out ran him in the ole farm truck. He couldnt believe how fast that pickup was and was a good sport about the lose. I enjoyed my time with doc

I love you Dad.... I will miss you for the rest of my life. You helped me navigate every difficult situation and were my biggest cheerleader. If I ever needed advice, you were my go to. It's because of you that I don't make excuses, try to find positives in everything, put family first, have faith in God, never give up, help those less fortunate, take risks, learn new things and follow my heart. I will miss your wisdom, your smile, your laugh, your hugs, your voice, your support, your love. I'm going to miss everything that you were. I'm even going to miss the times when you were stubborn donkey because I share that trait. :-) My heart is broken into a million pieces but I will work to continue the legacy you built through the heartache. Lana, Phillip, Shawn and I will always remain connected and supportive and we will forever include Diana in our family and ensure that she is cared for as our own. We love her and know you loved her infintely just as she loved you. Five decades with you just wasn't enough..... yet I know that with great love comes great pain.. and that's the hard part. You were incredible, the best parent imaginable - and when I look back at your life accomplishments, you really left an incredible legacy and I'm so proud of you. I love you Dad. Until I see you again.... I know you're with God, your parents and Sister and find peace in that.

When our kids were growing up, we spent every weekend at Conchas Lake. He gave us a few adjustments after water skiing falls. Some of the best memories of our lives, floating in our boats and watching all the kids swim and play.

We slow danced in a restaurant. There are lots of memories. When you care about someone, you want the best for them. I am so happy he found happiness with Diana.

I can't even put in words what my Uncle Phil meant to me. He made every, single family gathering special and gave me so many opportunities to travel, learn and enjoy life. He was truly one of a kind and a huge reason I am the person I am today. I am so thankful for everything my Uncle Phil did for me. Part of my heart is with him in heaven now. Until we meet again...

Doc was amazing man and I thanked him many times for being the man he is. I thanked him for accepting my son into his family. I thanked him for the wonderful daughter (Dawn), that he raised. I thanked him for raising all four of his awesome children, as they all accepted us into their families. I know hearts are hurting with this tremendous loss, but when one is loved so deeply, they never leave. They remain next to you and are always in your heart. I pray that God holds all of Doc´s family in His hands and comfort them today and days to come.
We love all the Powers family,

Sorry for your loss to all the Powers bunch. God bless the family during this time. Doc was a great man. During my time around the family he treated me as his own, he was a father figure who I looked up to after the loss of my own father. I will always be grateful for his kindness. Rest in peace Doc.

We are sad for your loss. Our prayers to all! Your dad played his guitar and sang at our wedding in 1976. Outdoors on a lake behind my parents home.
Remember many times on the lake watering skiing and having fun with the powers bunch!

back in the late 80's i went to Doc's house to sign paperwork on a new chevy truck When i stood to leave my head broke his chandalier and cut me. Most embarrased I have ever been. I felt terrible for breaking this expensive light. I looked at Doc and he had this big smile and bandaged me up. That smile made everything better RIP

Today I walked through my garage and got very emotional. The old car that he gave us sits. I can´t call him now for help. I can´t call Doc now to tell him what I did or fixed on the oldie. Or that we took it for a spin around town. He absolutely loved hearing about the smiles that old car brought to people. Or hearing about the old timers that would stop me to talk. Doc said " yup, I told you that was gonna happen". I miss you Doc. Go rest high on that mountain.

Uncle Phil, "Doc" always made me smile and laugh. He will be greatly missed. Thinking of my sweet cousins and his wife, Diana during this hard time.
