First Sergeant Duane D. Doran (Ret.)
1970 – 2026
First Sergeant Duane D. Doran, U.S. Army (Ret.), passed away on February 21, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, strength, and deep devotion to his family.
Born in
Redondo Beach, California, Duane answered the call to serve in 2000 when he enlisted in the United States Army as a General Construction Equipment Operator. What began as a profession quickly became his calling. From his first assignment in Schweinfurt, Germany, it was evident that leadership was not simply a role for Duane, it was part of who he was.
During more than two decades of honorable service, Duane deployed to Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Serbia, Estonia, and other locations in support of U.S. and NATO missions. He led route clearance operations in Iraq, supervised the disposal of enemy ordnance, and completed critical engineering projects in combat environments. In Afghanistan, he helped build roads, forward operating bases, and key infrastructure supporting thousands of Soldiers.
On August 28, 2007, while deployed in Afghanistan, Duane's worksite was struck by a suicide vehicle-borne attack. Despite sustaining a shrapnel wound to the head, he immediately rendered lifesaving aid to a wounded Soldier. That moment reflected who Duane was at his core, courageous, selfless, and unwavering in his commitment to protect others.
As a Platoon Sergeant and senior Noncommissioned Officer, Duane trained and mentored thousands of Soldiers. He demanded excellence but led with heart. His Soldiers knew he would never ask them to do something he would not do himself. He strengthened NATO partnerships, led multimillion-dollar construction missions across Europe, and earned numerous awards, including the prestigious Bronze DeFlury Medal. Yet the recognition he valued most was the respect and trust of his Soldiers.
Beyond his military achievements, Duane's greatest pride was his family.
In August 2000, while stationed in Germany, Duane met Melanie. His kindness, humor, and unforgettable smile swept her off her feet. They were married on July 24, 2003, beginning a life together built on love, resilience, and unwavering loyalty. Through deployments, moves, and long separations, they stood side by side for more than 22 years of marriage.
Duane was a devoted father to his four sons, Damien, Dwight, Austin, and Darryn. He was immensely proud of the men they are and the lives they are building. His son, Dwight, is married to Brooke, and together they blessed Duane with two beloved grandsons, Levi and August, who brought him immeasurable joy and laughter. His family was his greatest accomplishment, and no matter how demanding the mission, Duane made it a priority to show up as a husband, father, and grandfather.
He is also survived by his brother, Kirk, and his sisters, Jaime, Mindy, and Donna, who will remember him for his strength, loyalty, humor, and the deep bond he shared with his family.
Outside of the Army, Duane found peace and joy on the golf course. He was a passionate and talented golfer who loved the game not only for the competition, but for the quiet focus and reflection it provided. Over the years, he had the opportunity to play on many different courses across various countries during his military career. Golf was his time to unwind, reset, and simply breathe. A space where he found calm and balance.
Duane believed in commitment, to his country, to his Soldiers, and to his family. He lived with integrity and loyalty. He was strong but compassionate, disciplined yet warm-hearted, a respected leader and a deeply loving husband and father.
He now rests in peace, reunited with fellow Soldiers who have gone before him and embraced by loved ones waiting on the other side.
His legacy lives on in the countless Soldiers he mentored, the missions he completed, the partnerships he strengthened, and most of all, in the hearts of his family.
Duane, you were and always will be deeply loved.
Your legacy will endure.
