Duane Hamblin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Premier Funeral Services - Salt Lake City on Mar. 10, 2026.
Duane Edwin Hamblin will be remembered by those who knew him as an intelligent and imaginative individual. Curious and creative. But time and human frailty exacted their toll, and for Duane it came in the form of dementia.

On March 4th 2026, he moved on from the bounds of mortality and his mind, his ideas and imagination extend into the universe.

He will be remembered by his posterity as a kind, loving and humorous man. He is missed intensely by his loving wife Alice Jane Turner Hamblin to whom he was married for over 62 years, often creating unique special valentines cards with unusual materials from fabric to steel.

Duane thought of himself as a cowboy, being born in his parents home on their dairy farm in Montwell, Utah. He was born on August 1, 1941 and survived pneumonia and whooping cough as an infant. He grew up working on the farm riding horses and managing cows. But his heart was always in electronics and radio from an early age. Later in life he would build an early computer from instructions in a magazine, have an amateur radio license (WB7BVM) and pioneer the use of computers by Uintah Basin Telephone and later was instrumental in introducing the cellular phone system in the Uintah Basin area.

He was deeply faithful in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served three missions for the church. First in Alberta Canada in his twenties, then with his wife in Honolulu Hawaii (and Christmas Island, Kiribati) and with his wife at Nauvoo Illinois, helping in the restoration efforts and presenting to guests of the city.

Though he was never formally trained, he had a good voice and enjoyed singing, especially old cowboy songs. He also played the harmonica very well, and tinkered with a variety of other instruments that piqued his curiosity. Those who knew him best will remember the intricate carvings he would make from sticks or branches using only his pocket knife.

He was always curious and constantly learning and dabbled in many crafts and hobbies and had a strong mind for mechanical things. He was able to fix so many things and frequently arrived to the rescue of family , sometimes driving many miles to fix a vehicle with whatever materials he had available.

Though he was extremely shy as a child, he overcame it, learning to enjoy performing and reciting for friends and family. He was simply kind and friendly to nearly everyone he met and frequently induced laughter with a variety of jokes and antics.

Duane brought joy and resourcefulness to every corner of his life. He is survived by his loving wife, Alice, their seven children: Holly (Craig), Matthew, Jacob "JJ", Allison, Adam (Lisa), Miranda, Joel (Annalisa), 28 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and many others who were blessed by his kindness, wisdom, and inventive spirit. He was preceded in death by two grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 14th at Premier Funeral Services in Midvale, Utah (67 East 8000 South,) at 12:00 pm with a viewing starting at 11:00 am prior to services. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to share a memory of Duane or perform an act of service in his honor. Interment will be at Midvale City Cemetery.
