Duane Lindemoen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sunset Memorial Chapel - Des Moines on Mar. 13, 2026.
February 8, 1939 – May 2, 2025

Duane Maynard Lindemoen was born on February 8, 1939, in Warren City, Marshall County, Minnesota, and went to be with the Lord on May 2, 2025, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Though he was born in Minnesota, Duane spent most of his life in the Des Moines area. It was there that he met the love of his life, Viola, with whom he raised four sons. Duane worked as an operator for Neumann Bros. Construction and played a role in the building of several iconic structures in downtown Des Moines, including the Ruan Building, Marriott Hotel, and Carrier Building. Later in his career, he served the Des Moines Public Schools for about ten years.

In his retirement years, Duane found joy in short visits and phone calls with family and friends. He enjoyed watching Netflix and YouTube, especially Everybody Loves Raymond, Blue Bloods, Law & Order, and inspirational sermons. Gospel music by the Gaithers was a favorite. He had a sweet tooth for Kit Kats, which he lovingly shared only with his great-grandchildren. His favorite and almost every night dinner for the last couple of years was a coke on ice and drumstick ice cream cone.

Duane's greatest hope was to spend eternity in Heaven with his Lord and Savior-a goal he has now fulfilled.

He is survived by his four sons: Michael (Cherie), Thomas (Sara), Timothy (Lea), and Jeffrey (Mandy); eight grandchildren: Richard Squier, Ryan (Anna) Squier, Ashley Von derhaar, Cortney (Terry) Stover, Erik Lindemoen, Jared Proctor, Andrew Lindemoen, and Travis Lindemoen; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Bev Lehman, David (Jan) Lindemoen, and Barbara (Jim) Fitzgibbons; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Duane was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Viola May; his parents, Melroy Arther and Edith Viola (Mickelson) Lindemoen; his brother, Allan Lindemoen; and his sisters, Shirley Pittman and Phyllis Smith.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 8, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Chapel, 7601 Fleur Drive, Des Moines, IA. Funeral services will take place on Friday, May 9, at 10:00 a.m., also at Sunset Memorial Chapel, with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." -2 Corinthians 5:17
