Duane Allen "Dewey" Walton
October 27, 1951 -- January 6, 2026
AMES, IOWA -- Duane Allen "Dewey" Walton, 74, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, in Ames, Iowa. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a pillar of the Iowa State University community, he will be remembered for his steadfast work ethic and his dedication to his family.

Early Life and Education - Duane was born on October 27, 1951, in Algona, Iowa, the son of Charles and Ivadell (Bolte) Walton. He was a graduate of United Community Schools and furthered his education at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), where he earned a degree in Auto Parts and Sales.

A Career of Dedication - After beginning his career with Blacks Seed Farm and Ford Motor Company, Duane transitioned to Iowa State University, where he served with distinction for 38 years. He was most proud of his tenure as a maintenance engineer for the ISU Complex. His primary responsibility was the stewardship of Hilton Coliseum; there, he worked tirelessly behind the scenes to provide comfort and security for countless athletes, stars, and fans. He retired in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of service to the University.

Life and Interests - Known for his quick wit and a robust sense of humor, Dewey was a natural storyteller. He found great joy in sharing jokes and his vast wealth of knowledge with anyone he met. A "Forever True" Cyclone, he was a passionate supporter of Iowa State athletics. He was a man of many talents who found satisfaction in the precision of mechanics and the structure of home building. Duane and Marlene shared in the joy of hosting several foster and foreign exchange students over the years, including a student who was royalty from Sweden. Dewey also possessed a compassionate heart for all animals, notably sharing a special bond with his rescued companion, Chicky the chicken.

Family - In 1972, Duane married Donna Marie Leibold, and to this union two children were born, children Jennifer Ray (Crutcher) and Cory Duane were born.

On June 12, 1982, he was united in marriage to his loving wife, Marlene Adele Fandel, at the Napier Community Church. Together they shared 43 years of marriage and raised three children: Joseph Michael, Amanda Sue and Andrew John.

His memory will be cherished by his wife, Marlene; his children, Jennifer Crutcher, Joseph Walton, Amanda Walton, and Andrew Walton; and his six grandchildren: Jacie Crutcher, Jesse Crutcher, Dylan Walton, Delaina Derry, Adriann Walton, and Autumn Walton. He is also survived by his brothers, Dennis (Vivian) Walton and Devon (Debra) Walton, and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ivadell Walton; his sister, Diane Trampel; his son, Cory Duane Walton; and his grandson, Dalton Derry.

I assisted Duane´s mother Ivadel when she taught bible school at the church in Napier. I also was in the United Community Theater group with Devon before he moved to Minneapolis.
