Durwood "Alex" Matthews, born in Weldon North Carolina on January 15, 1937. At the age of 88 Alex went home to be with the lord and his wife on November 27th, 2025 in Lake Isabella California surrounded by his children. Alex followed his wife Fawn of 65 years, his Mother Leona, sister Mildred and brothers Thurman and Wilbur Ray.

Alex is survived by his, brother Rowland and wife Jackie Matthews of Georgia and brother-in-law, John Burrows and wife Sharon of Arizona and son Kevin. Alex and Fawn's 6 children: Alex Matthews Jr., and wife Vicki of Florida; Children Alex and Nicole; Gail Lindblom and husband Karl of Kentucky, child Autumn; Jeff and Donna Matthews of Florida children Jeremy, Teresa and Tim, Robbin and Robbie Lawrence of Virginia, children Whitney and Courtney, Debra and Steve Radman of California, children Tony, Rikki, Joshua and Jeremiah, Donald and Yvette Matthews of Tennessee, child Garrett, Carissa, Kinsey, Cameron as well as numerous great grandchildren.

Alex started coming to Kern Valley in 1952 with his wife Fawn, both love the area very much. Alex and Fawn became permanent residents in 1981. Alex was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and Great grandfather and grandfather to many families that cherished him. Family was always a number one priority in his and his wife's lives together. Alex proudly served 25 years in the U.S. Army, leaving a legacy to those served with him touching lives in California, Texas, Florida, Washington, Iceland, Greenland and in Germany. After retiring from the Army Alex turned his gift of mechanics to Pepsi Cola plant working for almost 30 years as an engineer. Alex also loved working with his hands and could build or repair almost anything, loved his garden, sitting in the sunshine, and his beloved dog Ladybug.
