Our Daddy and best friend Dustin has left the earth. He was such a light in our lives. We will forever miss his beautiful blue eyes and his smile. His voice, his laugh, and most of all those big, make everything better squeezes. He never hesitated to tell his kids, wife, family or friends I love you. There was never any question where we stood with him. He was a friend to all. Always doing what he could to make people feel included and cared about. He had the unbelievable gift of befriending anyone. He chose to see the good in people, forgiving or generally not caring about any mistakes or flaws they may have. He always said everyone deserves a 2nd chance. Dustin fought so many battles and demons throughout his life. He overcame addiction and came out an even better person, regardless of the darkness and struggles he endured. He worked so hard and fought for a good life with his wife and 3 girls. He would've done anything in his power (and beyond) for us. His final battle was unfortunately lost. Depression took our daddy from us. His was ripped away from us far too soon because of this horrendous disease. The void he left is too big for words.
Dustin was born March 5, 1982 to very proud parents, Jim & Valerie Didericksen. He was the youngest of 4 kids. He had 3 big sisters; Angela Mahan, Sasha Gray and Brandi Wood. He spent his childhood playing every sport imaginable. He excelled at all but loved none more than baseball and football. He could play any position with natural talent. He was a part of many sports teams and forever cherished his time playing but mostly the friendships that came from them. Once you were considered his friend, you kept that honor. He spent the rest of his childhood doing anything with friends, causing a lot of mischief. He was always up for some rule breaking if it meant having a good time. He was the life of the party. Wherever he is, he is sitting around the campfire telling jokes and telling stories.
Throughout his entire life, he stayed very close to his Mom & Dad. They were his best friends and biggest supporters. He talked to them every day. He enjoyed being around them in any way. When Jim passed away last year, a piece of Dustin's heart went with him.
Dustin met his "Bunches" Lacey Openshaw at 21. They had an instant connection. They had both found their "person". They were partners in crime, best friends and the loves of each others lives. They were married on December 6, 2007. The happiest day of either of their lives came on March 6, 2008 when they became Mom & Dad to the most beautiful girl the world has ever seen, Gracie Mae. From day 1 she was the reason, the purpose and the only thing that mattered to her Daddy. They were the best of buddies. It didn't matter what they were doing, if they were together they were happy. They welcomed a 2nd baby girl, Mia Belle, on December 19, 2014. Dustin was instantly smitten. They quickly welcomed baby girl #3, Zoey Rose, on July 19, 2016. He couldn't help but smile and giggle just looking at his girls. They brought so much joy to his life. He loved being their Daddy more than anything in the world. He was so proud of the little ladies in our house. Taking every opportunity to love and squeeze them, joke and tease them and to teach them. Dustin loved music. We always had music playing at home, in the car, anytime it was possible. He loved quizzing us on who the bands were or what the songs names were. He also loved teaching us. About any and everything, but especially about rocks and space. He had about every type of rock and would tell you where it came from, what it stood for or how it was formed. He was constantly reading anything he could about space. All science was interesting to him but space and energy were the most fascinating. He was always saying "did you know…" and tell us about something interesting he had learned, wether or not we wanted to hear it. He loved red rock, Zion in particular. He always felt that was his heaven. We could spend hours hiking through the canyon, splashing in the Virgin River, or just staring at the majestic landscape surrounding us. Stargazing in the dark canyon was always a highlight of our trips down there.
Every day without our Dustin seems like an eternity. And looking at the road ahead, without him by our side, is too much to bear. He is loved and will be missed by so many. He will forever be in our hearts and we long for the day we get to see and hold him again.
