With deep gratitude for a life of service, love, and unwavering patriotism, we announce the passing of Dwight J. "Dewey" Frick, age 78, of Monroe, WI, formerly of Darlington, WI. Dewey passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI-a fitting place of honor for a proud American veteran.
Born in Estherville, Iowa, to Russell and Pearl (Nissen) Frick, Dewey was raised in Armstrong, IA, where his strong work ethic and deep values first took root. A graduate of Armstrong High School, Dewey answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. As a Seabee (Combat Engineer), he served with distinction during the Vietnam War, building and protecting vital infrastructure under some of the harshest conditions. His devotion to duty and love of country remained the cornerstone of his life.
After returning home, Dewey settled in Wisconsin, where he worked in construction and later became a beloved bartender in Darlington. He was a dedicated member of the Bates-O'Brien-Howe-Wiegel-Roelli American Legion Post #214, always ready to serve fellow veterans-whether it was organizing events, giving rides to the VA hospital, or simply lending a helping hand.
Dewey was a man of deep passions and simple joys. He loved the land and the rhythm of farming. He had a special place in his heart for classic cars-especially his cherished 1971 Chevelle. A fierce defender of the forgotten, Dewey had a soft spot for animals, especially stray cats, many of whom found a forever home with him. His beloved furbabies, Mando and Betty, were constant companions.
He found joy in the holidays-Halloween and Christmas were among his favorites-and was known for his good humor, generosity, and patriot's heart. Dewey lived with humility, integrity, and a readiness to help others without ever needing recognition.
Dewey is survived by his children: Anthony Frick and Dillon (Kim Mueller) Frick; his siblings: Steve (Jan) Frick, Sally (Greg) Bratland, Penny (Bruce) Guse, and Duane Frick; the mother of his children, Vicky (Mark) Rideout; and his girlfriend: Teresa Torstenson. He also leaves behind his two adored cats, Mando and Betty. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Pearl Frick.
A funeral service honoring Dewey's life and service will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. at Erickson Funeral Home (508 Main St., Darlington) with Rev. Nick McElrath of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Union Grove Cemetery in Darlington, provided by his fellow comrades at American Legion Post #214.
Visitation will be held Monday, June 2, 2025 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Erickson Funeral Home and again on Tuesday from 10:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. prior to the service. Online condolences may be expressed at www.ericksonfuneralhome.com.
