Dwight Sterk Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bittner Funeral Chapel - Mitchell on Jan. 3, 2026.
Dwight Sterk, 61, of Dickinson, ND, formerly of New Holland, SD, passed away Friday, January 2, 2026, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, January 8, at Harrison Community Church in Harrison, SD, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Harrison Cemetery. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Dwight Michael Sterk was born January 23, 1964, to Mike and Angie (BaanHofman) Sterk in Platte, SD. He was baptized and made profession of faith at a young age at the Harrison Christian Reformed Church.

He lived a life rooted in hard work, generosity, and a deep appreciation for the simple things.

Dwight loved the outdoors and found true contentment in a simple, hands-on way of life. That love showed early, as he began working with large equipment and moving dirt while still in high school. What started as a job became a lifelong passion and career. He first worked for Gary Vander Pol, later moving to Yankton where he worked for Slowey Construction. From there, he relocated to Mitchell, South Dakota, where he worked for Schoenfelder Construction and spent time working for the City of Mitchell.

Eventually, Dwight made his way to Dickinson, North Dakota, where he was working for Baranko Brothers at the time of his passing. No matter where his work took him, he was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and pride in a job well done.

Outside of work, Dwight had a deep passion-and what many would call an addictive hobby-for Huber tractors. He took great joy in finding and collecting these old machines, appreciating their history and craftsmanship. Upon retirement, he had plans to spend his time rebuilding several of the Huber tractors he had purchased, a project he greatly looked forward to.

Above all else, Dwight had a kind and giving heart. He would give the coat off his back to anyone in need. His family meant everything to him, and his grandchildren were his greatest pride and brought him endless joy.

Dwight will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy lives on through his family, the work he was proud of, and the generosity and kindness he shared so freely with others.

Dwight is survived by his children, DJ Sage (Sabrina) of Yankton, Jessica Sterk (Donovan Seiler) of Yankton, and Allison Sterk (Jeremy Gaertner) of Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren: Tristin Sage, Adalynn Sage, Paislynn Sage, Deondre Davies, ZaNyah Seiler, Avaya Seiler, Jade Seiler, and Berlin Gaertner; his parents, Mike and Angie; siblings, Vicky (Bruce) Graves of Mitchell, Daren (Kelly) Sterk of Mitchell, and LaDawn (Brian) Weidner of Dickinson, ND; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John & Minnie Sterk and William & Bessie BaanHofman, and numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.

Memorials may be directed to Dakota Christian.
