Earle Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Partlow Funeral Chapel - Lebanon on Dec. 29, 2025.
Earle "Sonny" Smith age 87 passed away December 25th, 2025. Born in Troy, NY, he was drafted into the United States Army and served from 1961 to 1963, primarily in Verona, Italy. After his military service, he married and had a son, James, who lived only a short time. He later had a daughter, Melodie.

In 1974, Sonny moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue a songwriting career. During that time, he chose to raise his daughter as a single parent.

He worked as an internal mail carrier with Vanderbilt Medical Center until 1984. After that, he pursued various interests, including traveling, camping, songwriting, and volunteering with numerous organizations. He lived in several small towns throughout Tennessee and worked for the City of Knoxville and for Pinkerton Security until his retirement. He also spent several years as an active member of the Senior Center in Madison, Tennessee.

In 2018, Sonny moved to Hartsville, Tennessee, with his daughter. He spent his remaining years volunteering as long as he was able, including with Meals on Wheels. His final months were spent at Quality Care and Rehab Center in Lebanon, Tennessee.

Earle "Sonny," also known as PaPa, is remembered by family and friends as a kind, humble, hardworking man with a quick wit, strong values, and a close personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Each day, he made it a point to begin his morning on his knees in prayer.

He is survived by his daughter, Melodie Forkum; his grandson, William Forkum; four great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Jude (7), Beatrice Faith (5), Linnea Joy (4), and Solomon James (3); his sister, Beverly Coffee of Latham, New York; and several nieces and nephews.

The family thanks the staff at Quality Care and Rehab and Nursing Center for the care provided during his final days.
