Ed Cady Obituary

Published by Macy Allnutt Funeral Service-Eaton Chapel on Apr. 1, 2011.
Alonzo Edward "Ed"Cady, Jr. (age 77) passed away on April 1, 2011. He was in a ski accident on Feb. 3, then contracted pneumonia, and subsequently, acute respiratory distress syndrome. He was born in Fort Collins, CO on Feb. 23, 1934 to Alonzo Edward and Amy Williamson Cady. The family moved to Laramie, WY for ten years, and then moved back to Ft. Collins in 1946. Ed enjoyed living on a rural tract of land on North College Ave, caring for farm animals and being able to ride horses with his neighboring friend. He attended Ft. Collins High School and then Colorado A. & M College before Colorado State University. He graduated from Veterinary School in 1958 with a D.V.M. degree. He spent two years in the Army as a First Lieutenant in the Veterinary Corp, working at the Biological Warfare Laboratories at Ft. Detrick, in Frederick, MD. Ed married Carolyn Mair in 1959, after meeting as students at CSU. In 1960, Ed started to work at a mixed animal veterinary practice in Ogallala, NE. Their son, Bruce was born there. In the fall of 1961, Ed and Carolyn moved to Southern Calif. and Ed worked for a veterinary practice in Pasadena, CA. Daughter, Sharon was born in Pasadena. In 1965, Ed and Carolyn purchased a small animal hospital in Covina, CA and Ed managed that veterinary practice for the next 35 years. In 1972, Ed had the previous buildings torn down and built a new animal hospital, conforming to the high design standards of the American Animal Hospital Assoc. He was proud to maintain an AAHA Hospital certification. He was active in the So. Calif. Veterinary Medical Assoc serving as president. He was on the Board of Governors of the Calif. Veterinary Medical Assoc. He enjoyed his profession of caring for animals and helping their owners. He willingly worked many long hours, with very few weekends off, or vacations. He was interested in caring for some exotic animals, as well as the usual small animal pets, treating anteaters, one crocodile, and an occasional snake, bird, rat, or hamster. Ed enjoyed his activities in the Covina Rotary Club, maintained perfect attendance for many years, He was active in the Covina Methodist Church and in Bruce's Boy Scout Troop. That troop supported 4 boys at the same time, including Bruce, in earning their Eagle Scout Award. Ed enjoyed quite a few hikes with the Boy Scouts, some for a week long backpacking trip in the Sierra Mountains. Ed and Carolyn belonged to the "Funster" Square Dance Club, in Covina, and enjoyed weekly dances for 34 years. When Ed sold his practice and retired in the year 2000, he and Carolyn moved back to Ft. Collins to be near family and Ed's beloved Colorado mountains. Ed was thrilled to be able to participate in activities that he had never had time to do before. He went on weekly hikes into the mountains, played tennis, and went bird watching with new friends in the Ft. Collins Newcomers Club. He started going skiing and met three other men who liked to ski as he did. They soon started a close association, going skiing together weekly, to many different local ski slopes, from October through April. Ed enjoyed this immensely, counting himself blessed to be able to participate for so many years. Ed and Carolyn continued their participation in the activity of square dancing when they moved to Colorado. Ed enjoyed wearing the western style clothes and cowboy boots. He had quite a collection of special buckles and bolo ties to wear to the dances. He enjoyed growing a garden for the first time, in Colorado. He loved to go fly fishing in the Colorado streams and fishing in the local lakes with a friend. .He had a great time attending the CSU football games and also enjoyed basketball and volleyball games. Ed is survived by his wife of over 51 years, Carolyn, his son, Bruce, of Ft. Collins, and his daughter, Sharon Gibson (Michael Alan). of Newport News, VA. He is survived by three grandchildren, Nathan, Athena, and Luke Gibson, of Newport News and three nephews, Robert Moody of Turner, OR, Bill Taylor of Fishers, IN and Hannon Wilson of Troutdale, OR. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, three half sisters, and two half brothers. A celebration of Ed's life will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1005 Stover St, Fort Collins on Wed., April 27, at 11:00 a.m. Internment will be at Grandview Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 650 W. Ed Cady, a lifelong friend is gone too soon. We grew up together as neighbors in north Fort Collins. It was Boy Scouts, deer hunting, riding our horses, and then vet school together. It is sad to lose such a friend. Condolences to Carolyn, Bruce and others in the family.
