Edgar J Hood II was born to Edgar (EJ) and Marie Hood on Sept. 27, 1945, in Pearsall, TX. He lived in Houston with his parents until the age of 14, when the family relocated to Port Isabel.
He graduated from Port Isabel High School in 1963. He earned his bachelor's degree and received a master's degree in School Administration.
He began teaching at Flour Bluff High School and served as a teacher and school administrator at various schools in his 55-year career. He never really thought of himself as "just a teacher" but as A Bridge Builder, a reference to the poem "The Bridge Builder" by Will Allen Dromgoole. Because of that, many of his students never just considered him a teacher, but a mentor and indeed a bridge builder, helping them succeed in their own journeys. Many of those former students remained lifelong friends.
He took piano lessons as a child, and that created a love for music, primarily worship music, as he served as music director for many churches including First Baptist Church of Brownsville and Lane Prairie Baptist Church. He was a deacon and he loved teaching Sunday School.
Although he wasn't an athlete, he loved sports and attended as many games as he could. He was a fixture at high school football games everywhere he taught.
He also loved theatre and was a great supporter of the high school One Act Play competition, and even directed several competitions plays at Dawson High School. He had season tickets for Theatre Under the Stars in Houston and once attended a performance there alongside former president George H W Bush. In his later years, he was a volunteer at Plaza Theater in Cleburne.
He also loved to travel and visited 45 states including Alaska and Hawaii.
He was a self-taught crochet artist, often making and gifting baby blankets for friends, family and former students about to have a baby.
He also owned and operated a peach farm briefly and became an expert and canning and making jelly.
Edgar was preceded in death by his parents E J and Marie Hood. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Linda, and his three children Elizabeth Owens, Rosalind Hood, and Marcus Hood, one grandson Justin Benavidez, a daughter by choice Tania Solis, and a favorite cousin, Brenda Cook.
