Edgar Lloyd Smith, a cherished member of the South Boston, VA community, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 16th, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on Saturday, March 25th, 1944, Lloyd lived a full and vibrant life surrounded by the love and laughter of family and friends.
Lloyd was a loving father of two children who survive him: Tammy Smith Pool & husband, Tommy of South Boston, VA, Deborah Smith Thomas of South Boston, VA. He is further survived by his three grandsons, William Thomas Pool II & wife, Lauren, Gabriel Evan Pool (Cat), and Landon Brock Thomas (Holly). Lloyd was a cherished brother to his sister, Jean Smith Poole of South Boston, VA, and his brother, Wayne Edmond Smith of Virgilina, VA. and numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his son, Edgar Lloyd "Louwee" Smith, Jr.; his parents, Frank Sidney Smith and Ella Link Smith; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Smith; nephew, Randy Smith; brother-in-law, Bernard "Bunk" Poole, Sr.; and great-nephew, Brad Poole.
A proud alumnus of Halifax County High School, Lloyd was a graduate of the Class of 1963. He dedicated a notable portion of his working life as a truck driver with Keystone Mills, Lafell Elliott Trucking, Clover Yarns, Fallen Trucking, R.O. Harrell and Crewe Transport, where he was respected for his hard work and dedication.
Lloyd was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Above all, he was a man of devotion and faith to the Lord. He had recently finished reading The Bible through to completion for the third time in his life. Lloyd had a deep passion for his grandsons, hunting and fishing, pastimes that connected him with nature and brought him peace and joy. His enthusiasm for NASCAR was widely known, marking him as an avid fan among his family and friends. He was a lifelong baseball fan, not settling on a particular team, but loving every aspect of the game. His true passion was tractors, once even driving a pair of tractors with his brother, Wayne, from Halifax County, VA to Portland, IN over 700 miles away. He was a member of Woodmen of the World Lodge 106 and Halifax County Heritage and Antique Machinery. Lloyd had an equally close bond with his sister, Jean, who he spoke to every day of his life, whether by phone or a visit.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.
