Edith Marshell Carter, 81, of Fayetteville, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026.
Born July 1, 1944, in Sampson County, Edith was the daughter of the late Marvin and Annie Ammons Goodman. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Fairley Keve Carter; son, Adam Keith Carter; siblings, Ruthie Ammons, Bob Goodman, Berline Jones, Oleta Strickland, Mack Goodman, Hulon Goodman, Dallas Goodman, Elva Dean Brewington, and Rural Goodman; and special friends, Brenda, Eva, Mary, and Melissa Watson.
Edith is survived by her daughter, Stefanie Carter Herring and her husband Joel; daughter-in-law, Michelle Barefoot Carter; special nieces, Sabrina Brewington, Valerie Sweatt, (Fairley's niece) Kayla Carter, Cindy Brewington, Charlotte Davis, and Linda Jarman; honorary grandchildren, Jared Brewington, Robert Jarman III, Elizabeth Carter, and Sequoia Carter; several other nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends.
Known as dependable and hardworking, Edith diligently worked for MJ Soffe until she retired after twenty years of service. Her dependability was also present in everyday life, as she was always there when needed. Her gentle spirit made her into a compassionate caregiver who put everyone’s needs before her own. She was strong in her faith, willing to mentor others in all areas she could. Edith was known as a kind, funny, tough old bird who lived a simple but fruitful life. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, which she always did after her morning coffee and cookie.
Edith will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend, and will be greatly missed and forever cherished by everyone who knew and loved her.
Prior to the service on Friday, the family will receive friends at the home of Stefanie Carter, 306 Cherrybark Drive, Stedman, NC 28391.
