Dear Family of Ms. Edith: My husband and I knew Edith on Hoopers Island. We pastored The Wesleyan Church on the Island for 12 years. My husband did some handyman work for her and I enjoyed visiting her and our daughter, Juli, then about 10 years old would clean for her and do little odd jobs. Her brother, Father Murphy, lived next door and he taught me much about gardening. We have precious memories of her and she was a precious, Christian lady. I know you miss her greatly. Prayers and sympathy to all our Varner cousins on your loss. I have wonderful memories of spending time with Edith and Lee during a trip to Linz, and to St. Thomas in the mid-70's. They were very kind to me, and I have thought of them many times. I hope that peace will replace the sadness very soon, as you remember the joys of Edith's life.

I have so many fond memories of my Aunt Edith, Uncle Lee & my dear cousins, Mary Alice, Scott & Joy. It is sad that all of these but one are from my youth. I only wish Aunt Edith could have met our son, Scott Alan, the namesake of my Uncle Lee & dear cousin, Scott. I hold you in my heart as you mourn your Mom's passing. Lots of love to all of you--Claudia Faye

Joy, Mary Alice, Scott and family
I have so many fond memories of your mother and your father when I was a child. My family was blessed to have your father as pastor and your mother along side of him at Fairview Methodist Church, Danville, Va. We were blessed by being friends and spending much time together in each other's homes and vacationing together on the Eastern Shore. Wonderful Memories that have not been forgotten. Your mother was truly a woman of Grace and Noble character and a continual role model for me. I will continue to keep you in my prayers during this time of grief.

Edith Varner as I knew her was a wonderful Christian lady. I worked with Lee and Edith many years ago and learned a lot from both of them. Lovely, gentle, dear people. None better than Edith Varner.

To the Family of Edith Varner Cheatham,
I met your mother and Deane while my mother-in-law resided at the Hermitage. They were a lovely, interesting couple who were always cheerful. I have fond memories of the stories they told. They were a wonderful couple. I am sorry for your loss.

It was my pleasure and delight to know Mrs. Cheatham in her days at the Hermitage. She and Mr. Cheatham always brightened my days with their good cheer and loving ways. She was warm and caring with everyone she met and shared her inner peace and love with all who were lucky enough to spend time with her. Jody Taylor

When I was missionary in Vienna, Lee and Edith's work there had become legendary! It was my joy to meet her on one of her visits to the English-speaking congregation. We give thanks for the strong witness and the encouragement she offered so many.
May all who mourn be assured of the support of the "Everlasting Arms" and aware of the strong presence of God's own grace, peace, love and joy in the fellowship of those who remember and in the memories of Edith which have new meaning to us as we reflect on her life and rejoice in her future with God
