Edith Colwell Obituary

Edith Louise Crider Colwell, 89, of Exeter, passed away Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late James Edward and Edith Jones Crider. She graduated from West Scranton High School, Class of 1953, where she played trumpet in the school's band. Edith's career began at ICS in Scranton before moving with her husband and family to Indianapolis, Ind., where she worked for Aetna Insurance as a policy rater. They eventually returned to Exeter in 1982.

Edith was married to Norman Colwell, the love of her life, for 68 years. Together they welcomed five children, 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, who were all a big part of their lives.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, James Crider and William Harris; sister, Ruth Buchanon; and son-in-law, Stephen Rowell.

Edith is survived by her beloved husband, Norman; children, James, and his wife, Karo; Richard and his wife, Amy; Norma Jean Colwell-Rowello and her fiancée, Vincent; Joan Schwerdtman and husband, Kevin; William and his wife, Jenna; former daughter-in-law, Saundra Colwell; and sisters, Shirley Schultz and Joan Antal.

Edith enjoyed sewing and crocheting for many years. She also had a passion for researching and compiling the family tree. Saturday evenings were spent at home with her husband watching Lawrence Welk and Pennsylvania Polka.

She spent countless hours doting over her many grandchildrent and great-grandchildren by whom she will be greatly missed.

She was devoted in her faith and to her church.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, in Wyoming United Methodist Church, 376 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming. A candlelight service will follow at 8 p.m. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Norm, Saundra and family,
Edith was a lovely woman and I am glad I got to know her at WUMC. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. May the peace that only God can give be yours at this sad time. So sorry for your loss.
