Edith Egan Obituary

Middletown, NY

Edith Mae Egan, age 92, died on March 24, 2026. Edith is survived by her three children Thomas, Ruth and William; her daughter-in-law Susan; her grandchildren Sabrina, Corey, Bernard, Katharine, Sarah, Michael, David, Joseph; her great-grand-children Nathanial, Juillianna, Christopher, Fiona, Olivia, Bret and Avery; Jerry Higbie and extended family. Edith was preceded in death by her husband William and her son Michael.

Edith was born September 6, 1933 in Brooklyn to Joseph and Edith Daly, where she grew up in a loving home with her siblings Anne, Joseph and Ruth. Edith finished school in Brooklyn and began her career working at various companies in Brooklyn and Manhattan. On August 8, 1954 Edith married the love of her life, Bill and they started their 63 year journey together in Brooklyn. In 1973, they purchased a home in Haworth NJ, where Edith became a librarian at Haworth Municipal Library and volunteered as a crossing guard for the township. After raising their children, Edith and Bill moved to Middletown NY where Edith worked at Agway and Bon Secour Hospital and eventually retired.

Edith had a joy for reading, which made her a perfect librarian. She was an avid follower of British history and often corresponded with the Royal Family. Edith bowled for many years in Brooklyn and Haworth and had a network of lifetime friends that extended across multiple states. She loved summer vacations in Wildwood Crest with her family. She traveled extensively with her sister Anne and husband Bill across England, Ireland, Belgium and the United States. Edith had a strong faith in God and was active in church communities her entire life, including Holy Cross, Sacred Heart, Grace Chapel and Church of Christ.

While Edith had many accomplishments in her life, her inner joy and purpose came from the 72 years she was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the "glue" that held the family together, the "North-Star" that the family evolved around. She demonstrated deep love, dedication, self-lessness, sacrifice and strong support. Her influence and spirit will live on in their lives. She instilled in them a moral compass, meaningful social graces, a strong work ethic, a faith in God and a unique capability to overcome adversity.

Edith passed away peacefully in her sleep and will be memorialized in a private family ceremony. Donations can be made in Edith's name to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
