Edith M. Ater Hawkins, 87, of Frankfort, passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Vinton County on Monday, August 15, 1938, the daughter of the late Richard Olen and Lucille Wilson Justice. On December 5, 1956, she married Sherald G. Ater who preceded her in death on August 18, 1993. On June 15, 2013, she married Clyde A. Hawkins and her preceded her in death on April 4, 2017.
She is survived by her five children: Darla (Ed) Lockhart of Chillicothe, Terry (Brenda) Ater of Clarksburg, Todd Ater of Frankfort, Rick (Patti) Ater of Waverly and Lisa (Joe) Ater of Columbus. She is also survived by many grandchildren including Tammi Litteral who was her caregiver, and many great-grandchildren. Edith was the last of her family being preceded in death by her four brothers: Ray, Jack, Marvin and Ralph Justice.
Edith was a loving wife and mother. Her steadfast Christian faith sustained her all her life. She has now been united with her many family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 11 a.m. in the EBRIGHT FUNERAL HOME, Frankfort with Pastor Stanley Kennedy officiating. Following the service, she will be laid to rest beside her husband, Sherald, in New Holland Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
