Edith Rose Mays, age 99, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 17, 2024.

Edith was born October 7, 1924 in Troutdale, North Carolina to Charles and Mattie Blevins (Comer).    Edith married Argus Mays Sr, February 15, 1941 and he preceded her in death in October 1966.  Before retirement, Edith worked at Millington High School, Falls Dime Store, and with United Plastics in Vassar.  She was a longtime member of Millington Baptist Church.  Edith loved shopping, bird watching, and tending to her flowers and yard.  She had a special love for Cardinals.  Edith enjoyed spending time with family and friends.  She enjoyed Southern Gospel Music and attended many events associated with Southern Gospel music groups.  She enjoyed traveling to visit family in Tennessee.  She traveled to Hawaii, California, Branson, Alaska, and to many other places in the United States.  She was always sure to attend events for her Grandchildren.  Edith had a special way with the Grandbabies.  She was amazing at comforting and rocking the babies to sleep.  She would sing and love on every one of them and wasn’t about to give them up once she had them in her arms.  Edith’s goal was to live to be 100.  She fought like a trooper to try to reach her goal.  Though she was a little shy of her goal, she lived a full life here on earth.  She is starting her next hundred with a perfect pain free body and a new heavenly birthday.

She is survived by her sons:  Argus Mays Jr, Charles Mays, and Barry (Ruth) Mays; daughter-in-law, Shirley Mays; 18 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 25 great-great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, including one special friend, Mary Garrett, whom she traveled with often.

Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Argus; son, Joseph Mays (d. January 30, 2005); grandson Troy Mays; her parents, and 8 siblings.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the VFW, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Millington Baptist Church.

Edith’s family will welcome visitors to Hanlin Funeral Home in Millington on Friday, March 22, 2024, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Funeral services for Edith will follow at Millington Baptist Church (4727 Center St, Millington, MI 48746) on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 11 a.m.; additional visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service.  Interment to follow in Millington Township Cemetery.
