Edith Smit, age 93, formally of Waupun, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, November 15, 2024.
Edith was born on November 18, 1930 in Waupun, the daughter of Dick and Eike Beukema Kok. On June 14, 1949 she married Henry Smit in Waupun and they resided in Brandon. Throughout their married lives, which lasted until Henry's passing in 1996, Edith and Henry embraced the joys and challenges of being foster parents, providing a nurturing environment for 32 children. A dedicated member of the Celebration Assembly in Fond du Lac, Edith actively participated in church activities, sharing her talents as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and organist.
Edith is survived by her four daughters: Roxanne Smit, Beverly Hartmann, Patricia Clark, and Christal Smit; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth (Ward) Smit; ten grandchildren; Becky (Andy) Woppert, Michael Clark, Michelle Clark (Joseph Lau), Melissa Clark (Stephen Pierce), Eric (Chelsea) Smit, Amanda Smit, Jo Beth Wellhouse, Janessa (Kyle) Leusink, Jacinda (Austin) Trauernicht, and Ethan Wellhouse; eleven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Laverne Kok; along with many nieces and nephews, who all cherished her memory.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Henry; a son Brian Smit; sons-in-law: Frank Hartmann and Bryce Clark; a great-grandson, Cyrus Clark; her sisters: Catherine (Charles) Glewen and Martha (James) Hopp; her brothers: Theodore (Joan) Kok, Harold (Janet) Kok, Charles (Bernice) Kok, and Harvey Kok; along with several nieces and nephews.
Edith leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and faith that will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by family and friends alike, her warm heart and generous spirit forever etched in their memories.
Funeral services for Edith Smit will be held on Friday, November 22, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Celebration Assembly in Fond du Lac with Pastor Craig Ellefsen officiating. Burial will follow at Union Prairie Cemetery in Brandon. Visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
