Edith W Walters

Edith W. Walters, Edee to her family and friends, lived a very full and productive life. She grew up in Lakewood, Ohio as the only daughter of Frank and Laura Whittam. Her early years were filled with music, sports(basketball) and family car trips to Wisconsin. After high school she entered St. Luke's school of Nursing where she was known for rescuing stray cats, surgical research and roller skating. She graduated in 1958 with her RN, a degree she would put to good use for 60 years.
During the 1950s her parents moved to Buffalo so her father could continue his work at the local NBC affiliate. A family friend arranged a blind date with Jack Walters, who would become her husband on May 9, 1959. They shared a dedicated, loving marriage for 57 years, raising three children.
Throughout the years, she continued her work as a nurse, ultimately working for several Hospices across the country. While living in Texas, she was one of the first nurses to receive Hospice certification.
She also worked as a church organist, nursery school teacher and piano teacher. During her music career she became certified by the American Guild of Organists and as a Suzuki piano teacher. She also sang in various choirs and loved sharing music with others. While living in Kingsland, Texas she volunteered with Linus Connection – heading a unit that provided thousands of security blankets to children in need in the Texas Hill County.
Her nursing skills were integral in the care of her husband during his 9 year struggle with Alzheimer's before he died in 2016. She also developed dementia from which she passed peacefully on December 25, 2023.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Laura, as well as her brothers Frank (Pete) and James. She is survived by her three children, Greg Walters, Lisa Walters, and Ellen Walters and two grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Linus Connection (thelinusconnection.org).
