Edna Murphy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home on Jan. 28, 2026.
Edna F. (Bourke) Murphy, a beloved mother, grandmother, and Shrewsbury resident of 64 years, left this world peacefully in her home on January 25, 2026. Edna was 93; this marks the end of a remarkable life filled with compassion, service, and love.

Born on December 1, 1932, in Worcester, Massachusetts, Edna was the daughter of Edmund F. Bourke and Casmere (Wrobel) Bourke. She graduated from the former Ascension High School in 1950 and then attended the Saint Vincent Hospital School of Nursing where she earned her diploma in 1953. Edna's dedication to nursing became a lifelong vocation, and she enjoyed a rich and varied career as a Registered Nurse that spanned many years. From hospital staffing to private duty, she touched countless lives with her caring hands and nurturing spirit. In 1978, Edna began a new chapter with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Department of Public Welfare, where she served until her retirement in 1999.

In 1954, Edna married the love of her life, Richard ("Dick") Murphy. Their union was one marked by deep love and mutual respect, and together they shared many joyful years until Dick's passing in 1983. Edna missed Dick every day until she left this world.

Edna was not only a devoted wife but also a nurturing mother to her three children: Brian T. Murphy of Tacoma, Washington; Lynn E. Murphy-Cohen, and her husband Brian of Sudbury; and Melissa A. Murphy of Shrewsbury. She was also a proud grandmother to five wonderful grandchildren: Katie Murphy, Sarah Murphy, Molly, Emma, and Caroline Cohen. Each of her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she took great joy in being an active part of their lives. She is preceded in death by her beloved parents, her sister, Barbara Bourke, and her best friend since childhood Elaine Finnegan.

Edna's interests were as vibrant as her spirit. An avid reader, she found solace and adventure in the pages of books. She enjoyed traveling with her loved ones, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

She will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit Edna's family on Friday, January 30, 2026, from 10:00-10:45 AM at Saint Mary's Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 AM celebrating her life. She will be laid to rest next to her husband Richard in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
