Burcham, Edward Eugene
December 12, 1937 - February 2, 2024
Edward Eugene Burcham, 86, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2024, at Brighton Gardens. He has entered his rest to spend eternity in heaven with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and has been reunited with his childhood sweetheart and wife of 64 years, Gaynell Burcham, who passed away exactly two months earlier on December 2, 2023. Mr. Burcham was born on December 12, 1937, to the late Aaron and Beatrice Burcham of Winston-Salem. Eddie graduated from Hanes High School in 1957. He was employed his entire career at Western Electric which later became AT&T, where he was a technical writer and illustrator. Eddie went through twelve years of school with perfect attendance, without missing one day. He then displayed that same commitment to work, where he never missed a day for 40 years until he retired. A remarkable achievement.
Eddie was precented in death by his parents and wife, and a son, Barry Eugene Burcham. He is survived by two children, Mark Edward Burcham of Sydney Australia, and Trisha Burcham Tally (Jack) of Germanton, and three grandchildren; Emma Tally, Jackson Tally (Anna), and Hank Burcham.
Eddie was smart and witty, and loved to laugh and have fun. He loved music and was an accomplished musician in his early years when he played trumpet and drums at school and in several jazz bands. He later turned to singing where he sang bass in the church choir, and many singing ensembles, namely the Winston-Salem Choral. Eddie also loved sports and his beloved UNC Tarheels. His favorite sport was baseball which he played in his youth, and later became a very successful head coach for many years in the Mineral Springs Little League, of which he later became president of the league. Eddie also loved gardening and yard work, which he always had a yard that was the envy of the neighborhood and grew the best tomatoes you could possibly eat.
Mostly Eddie loved his wife, Gaynell, and his family. His wit and wisdom were cherished by all the family, and the best of times were always shared together, whether it was a holiday, birthday, or a simple Sunday afternoon throwing football in the backyard after church and lunch. He was known to his grandchildren as "PaPa", and a great PaPa he was. Those times will be greatly missed.
A memorial service and following visitation will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, at Salem Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
