Edward Allan Cupp, 77, of
Hopwood, Pennsylvania, passed away unexpectedly on February 25, 2025, with his loving family by his side.
Born on June 7, 1947, in Connellsville to Dr. Edward Alexander and Lois Ghrist Cupp, Ed was raised on the South Side of Connellsville by his mother and beloved maternal grandparents, Roy H. and Mildred E. Ghrist.
A proud Connellsville Coker, Ed graduated with the class of 1965. Throughout his youth, he developed a deep love of sports, spending countless hours playing basketball and baseball on local fields and courts. Summers were best spent swimming at his favorite and most cherished spot, the South Connellsville Beach on the Yough.
In high school, Ed was a natural leader and multi-talented student-serving as president of the mixed chorus, captain of the basketball team, and a member of the football team. Gifted with a powerful voice and an enduring passion for music, he began collecting records and formed his first band, The Town Criers, performing at East Park and other local venues. His love for music never waned. Ed continued performing for decades, most notably with Three's Company and More Bad News, the latter becoming a local favorite known for their unforgettable shows and Ed's magnetic, creative stage presence. In addition to performing, Ed was also a DJ for many years, spinning records and curating unforgettable nights at The Highland House. Whether on stage or behind the turntables, he truly found joy in entertaining others.
Ed earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from California State College in 1973, where he was also a proud member of Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE). He went on to devote 34 and a half years to teaching English, Literature, Writing, and Poetry at Laurel Highlands High School. Known for his sharp wit, brilliant mind, and heart of gold, Ed impacted the lives of countless students through his love of language and learning. A true wordsmith, he even read the dictionary nightly-just for fun. Writing was an essential part of his life, and he kept a daily journal for over 40 years-chronicling his days, recording meaningful quotes, song lyrics, and anything else that inspired him along the way.
Ed was so many things to so many people: supremely talented, endlessly intelligent, fiercely kind, and deeply loved.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 and a half years, Lisa Crawford Cupp; his son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Amy Cupp; his daughter and her partner, Hallie Cupp and Stefan Gomes; and his treasured grandson, Acen Elijah, who was the absolute light of his life.
He is also survived by his sisters, Patty (Gary) Wandel and Chris (Neil) Barkschat; his brothers-in-law, Paul Crawford and Phillip (Diane) Crawford; his sister-in-law, Laural Fait; and many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Ed leaves behind a legacy of laughter, music, words, and love. He will be remembered always and missed beyond measure.
Friends will be received in the DONALD R. CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME, HOPWOOD on Thursday, March 6, 2025, from 3 PM to 6 PM, with a service to follow at 6 PM.
