On behalf of the members of Chapter 227 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, I want to express our condolences on the passing of Ed Ettner, a true patriot of the United States of America. Although we did not know Ed, we were pleased to attend his 100th birthday event and boat ride with many others last April at the Pohick Bay Regional Park.
I have uploaded some pictures we took at the event including: Ed greeting the crowd, receiving a special plaque honoring his service, receiving a Vietnam Veterans of America "Challenge Coin" from Jay Kalner, President of Chapter 227, admiring his Birthday cupcakes, leaving for his boat ride down the Potomac, and finally receiving a firehose "salute" from the DC Fire Department.
I had an opportunity to talk with Ed briefly and reminded him that he began his military service as a "Tin Can Sailor" on a Naval Destroyer (as did I) before he joined the submarine force after WWII. I remember Ed chuckling and saying "I haven“t heard that term in a long time". It was an enjoyable event for all and our Chapter was glad to have met Ed and participate in the festivities.
