Edward Albert Gudeman, 84, of Greenwood, Indiana, died peacefully on January 12, 2011 at his home.
Born July 28, 1926 in rural East Lynn, Illinois, he was the son of the late Albert and Tillie Yergler Gudeman. After graduating from East Lynn High School, Mr. Gudeman continue to farm with his brother Will on the family farm. On June 5, 1949, he married Dorothy Jean Barth in Cissna Park, Illinois and they were happily married for 61 years.
While farming in Benton County, the Gudemans raised five children. At the age of 40, Mr. Gudeman switched careers and began working for Prudential Insurance in Frankfort, Indiana. He and his family then moved to Crawfordsville, Indiana and resided there for nearly 25 years. After 26 years of employment with Prudential, Mr. Gudeman retired and was inducted into the Prudential Hall of Fame. After retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Gudeman moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where they resided for 10 years and became members of the First United Methodist Church. While in Bloomington, they enjoyed watching IU soccer games, attending concerts at the Musical Arts Center (MAC) and IU Auditorium. They cherished relaxing walks through the IU Bloomington campus. In 2005, Ed and Dottie moved to Greenwood, Indiana so they could be near family.
Mr. Gudeman was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He especially enjoyed watching and appreciating his children and grandchildren’s activities and accomplishments. Mr. Gudeman also enjoyed reading the Bible, cooking fried chicken outside, watching IU basketball games, and playing fast paced and competitive euchre games. He was also very proud to be a 32nd degree Mason.
Surviving are his wife, Dottie Gudeman of Greenwood; five children, Steve (Beth) Gudeman of Lake Wylie, SC, Beth Gudeman of Lexington, KY, Lynn (Marc) Foster of Johns Creek, GA, Lori (Eugene Mszar) Gudeman of Manassas, VA, and Scott (Nancy) Gudeman of Greenwood; three sister-in-laws, Betty (Richard) Moderhack of Naples, FL, Caroline Gudeman of Cissna Park, IL, and Harlean Barth of Chicago, IL; sixteen grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, and a granddaughter, Abigail Gudeman.
A memorial service will take place at 11AM, Saturday, February 19, at the First United Methodist Church, 219 E. 4th Street, Bloomington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Abigail Elizabeth Gudeman Memorial Scholarship, ATTN: Office of University Development, UNC Charlotte, 9201 University City Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28223.
