It is with great sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved, Edward Elmer LaPlante Jr. at the age of 72, born in Rutland, VT and residing in Green Island, NY at the time of his death. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy LaPlante (Johnstone), father, Edward Elmer LaPlante Sr., stepmother Diane LaPlante (Dunbar), and mother of his children Colleen LeMay. He leaves behind many who will cherish his memory including, his children; Kelly LaPlante (Pamela) of Surprise, AZ, Shannon Thomas (David) of Smithfield, VA, his grandchildren; Alonso and Donovan LaPlante, Ana, Liam, Lillian, and Carolyn Thomas. As eldest brother he leaves behind 6 brothers and sisters; Catherine Johnstone, Mary Nairn (Dean), Erin Weber, Michael LaPlante, Andrena Neary (David), and James LaPlante (Chantel) as well as a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
Ed was a unique man with many talents and a sense of adventure. His life was full from working on the family farm to being a "Grandpoppi". He loved his country and honored it by enlisting in the Army and serving her until 1974. Later on working as a machinist at the Watervliet Arsenal. He served many in his life with his protective, giving, and loyal natures, along with his desire to show love by cooking a meal for anyone who would grace the threshold. Ed was extremely intelligent and resilient, combining that with his hardworking personality, he made this world a better place.
Ed wasn't all serious, rarely so. He was the family's resident comedian and prankster, poor Bubbles. His creative dreaming helped him become a talented wood craftsman, building kitchen cabinets to garden decor he loved creating things with his hands. He was a well rounded individual who loved music and collecting antique and modern instruments. Ed was a history buff who was fascinated by different wars all around the world. He enjoyed spending his free time researching conspiracy theories and engaging in science fiction books, movies and television shows. He was a walking encyclopedia full of knowledge on all topics. We will miss our deep talks with him and he will forever be in our hearts.
There will be a visitation held on Sunday, October 19th, 2025 from 3 to 4 pm, immediately followed by a celebration of life service. All services will be conducted at Dufresne Funeral Home located at 216 Columbia Street, Cohoes, NY 121047.
