Edward "Ed" Mamenta, 90, passed away on October 22, 2025, at his home in Hudson, Florida. He was born on December 29, 1934, to Agripino and Magayaga (Gutierrez) Mamenta in Tayug, Philippines.
In 1955, Ed came to the United States and joined the U.S. Coast Guard, beginning a 33-year career marked by dedication, service, and leadership. After training at the Coast Guard Training Center in Alameda, California, his first assignment was with the Captain of the Port in New Orleans, followed by service aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Boutwell in Brownsville, Texas. He later served on the Yakutat in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where he met his first wife, Teresa "Terry" (Fuller). Together they raised two children, Joanne and Edward.
Over the years, the family moved frequently as Ed completed tours of duty across the country. He served in a variety of roles, including supervising galleys, managing enlisted and officers' clubs, and overseeing exchanges and package stores. Ed rose steadily through the enlisted ranks, receiving numerous awards and commendations, and ultimately retiring as a Master Chief Petty Officer in 1988.
His assignments included duty on the Spar, Mellon, and Polar Star cutters, as well as posts in Bristol, RI; Yorktown, VA; Honolulu, HI; Nantucket, MA; Woods Hole, MA; Mobile, AL; Seattle, WA; St. Petersburg, FL; Miami, FL; and Clearwater, FL.
After retiring from active duty, Ed continued serving the Coast Guard community as a civilian, managing the exchange and package store at the Clearwater Air Station for another ten years. Away from work, Ed was an avid golfer and a member of a local league of retired Filipino Coast Guardsmen in the Tampa Bay area.
After the passing of his first wife, Ed reconnected with his first girlfriend in the U.S., Cecilia Cole, and they were married in 2012. Together they enjoyed traveling, playing cards, and cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Ed's life was defined by his dedication to service, his love for family, and his quiet sense of humor. He will be remembered as a steadfast husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and loyal shipmate.
He is survived by his wife, Cecilia; his brother, Rey (Ninfa) Mamenta of San Jose, California; his children, Joanne (Mark) Bjordahl of Hudson, Florida, and Edward Mamenta of Hudson, Florida; his stepchildren, Suzan (Gary) Erhart of Leeds, Maine; John (Lisa) Dimmitt of Wichita, Kansas; and Eileen (Robert) Eilert of Overland Park, Kansas; two grandchildren, Brianna Bjordahl and Jade Mamenta; five step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Honoring his wishes, the United States Coast Guard will lay Ed to rest with a burial at sea.
