Edward Messenger Obituary

Edward "Gene" Eugene Messenger, a beacon of love and wisdom, passed away peacefully in Bel Air, Maryland, on September 26, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on October 31, 1939, Gene life was a testament to his enduring compassion and intelligence, which touched the hearts of all who knew him.

Gene's devotion to his family was the cornerstone of his life. A loving husband for 65 years to Carol Ann Messenger, he was a pillar of strength and support. He was a guiding force for his children, Scott Messenger and wife Tricia, Kris Spangler and husband Tim, and Craig Messenger and wife Carmie. His wisdom will live on through his grandchildren, Philip Spangler and wife Tina, Sean Messenger and wife Joanie, Jackie Williams and husband Shawn, Carrie Morgan and husband Sam, Thomas Messenger, and Jessica Messenger. Gene was also a proud great-grandfather to Cora Mae Spangler, Livy Ann Spangler, Jaxon Williams, Raelynn Williams, Maya Williams, Bennett Messenger, Hallie Messenger, and James Morgan; his brothers-in-law Walter Grebe, Jr. and wife Sharon, Charles Grebe and wife Marilyn, and sister-in-law Mary Gioia and husband Frank; also survived by many nieces and nephews; His grandson Travis Spangler preceded him in death, leaving a legacy of love that will not be forgotten; he was preceded in death by his parents Edward Francis Messenger and Katharine Messenger and a sister Elaine Danna and her husband Cosmo.

Throughout his life, Gene was an active member of his community. He was involved with the Essex Jaycee and volunteered at the Cowenton Fire Department in the late '50s and early '60s. As president of the Harford/Fallston Recreational Council, he played a pivotal role in the organization's success. His commitment to education and faith was evident through his work with the Homeschool association at St. John the Evangelist Hydes Catholic Church, where he also volunteered for the Bull Roast, fostering a sense of community and fellowship. His dedication to his faith was further expressed as a fourth Degree with the Knights of Columbus. He later joined Fallston Volunteer Company in the late 70's.

Gene passions extended beyond his community service. He was an ardent fan of the Baltimore Colts and the Baltimore Orioles, sharing his love for the games with family and friends alike. An outdoorsman at heart, he found solace in hunting and tending to his garden, which was a source of joy and pride. His love for Maryland crabs and the art of crabbing were not only hobbies but traditions he passed down through generations.

Family and friends will honor and celebrate Gene's life at Evans Life Celebration Home 3-Newport Drive (Rts 23 and 24) Forest Hill on Wednesday, October 8 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A Memorial Mass will be held 10 AM Thursday, October 9 at St. John the Evangelist Church-Hydes with inurnment in the church cemetery.
