Edward Pell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service - Charlotte from Apr. 23 to May 2, 2025.
Edward Leigh Pell III, 90, of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025. A lifelong Charlotte resident, Eddie lived a full and rich life defined by family, friendships, and an enduring passion for the game of golf.

A graduate of Episcopal High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Eddie was deeply engaged in student life - serving as President of the SAE Fraternity and a member of the Gorgon's Head Lodge. A lifelong member of Myers Park United Methodist Church, his leadership and dedication to community continued throughout his life.

A gifted athlete and scratch golfer, Eddie found his greatest joy on the golf course. Whether playing a weekend round with friends or perfecting his swing, golf was more than a hobby - it was a lifelong passion. Eddie was a true steward of the sport. He served as President of Charlotte Country Club from 1987 to 1989 and was a multi-time Men's Club Champion, winning 16 tournament titles between 1966 and 2006 - a testament to his competitive spirit and love of the game. His legacy on the course and in the community will be long remembered.

Professionally, Eddie built a respected career as a textile executive, working for many years with integrity and commitment. From family beginnings at Pell Cotton Company, he moved on to McNeil Industries and Atlantic Spinners, where he developed yarns for apparel and hosiery. He was a genius with color and enjoyed creating unique yarns, which he sold worldwide.

Known for his dapper dress style - including a varied and colorful collection of bow ties he treasured - Eddie was a gentle soul who brought lightness and laughter to those around him. He was a terrific dancer, and his love for life was often expressed on the dance floor.

Another favorite pastime of Eddie's was fly-fishing, which he enjoyed with his two namesakes - his son and grandson - a cherished tradition that spanned generations.

Eddie is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Cornelia "Dee" Armfield Smith, and their children: Betsy Pell Burgess and her husband John, Edward Leigh Pell IV and his wife Winder, and Merrie Mac Pell Seaman and her husband Bleecker. He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and a devoted uncle to many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Allison Hodges Pell and Ellyn Gorham Pell; his brother, Allison Hodges Pell, Jr.; and his sister, Ellyn Pell Tanner.

In keeping with Eddie's wishes, there will be no formal service. The family will receive friends and loved ones at a later date to celebrate Eddie's life.

He will always be remembered for his warmth and quick wit, and his legacy lives on in the fairways he walked, the lives he touched, and the deep love he held for his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to The First Tee of Greater Charlotte, an organization that was especially close to Eddie's heart. The First Tee empowers youth through character-building experiences on and off the golf course-values that Eddie deeply admired and supported. Donations can be made online at First Tee of Greater Charlotte, or by contacting The First Tee of Greater Charlotte by mail at 2661 Revolution Park Drive, Charlotte, NC 28208, or by phone (704) 348-2515. Contributions can also be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
