I've known Ed 37 years; since he married Kathy, who is my first cousin. Ed was a beloved member of the extended Laird family as well as the immediate family of his mother-in-law, Essie Laird Kennedy. In Aunt Essie's later years she needed a lot of help, as did her sister who lived nearby, our Aunt Billie ("Bibbie"). Ed was often called on and was glad to be there, helping them around the house with problems and keeping up their large yards.
Kathy and Ed socialized a lot and had a large circle of friends they met for long, happy dinners and lunches. He was a gracious and generous host, always smiling and welcoming, and the entire family looked forward to the annual Christmas party/family reunion he and Kathy threw for friends and family for many years. It was the only time many of us ever saw each other.
Ed loved their dogs, and they all lived to be very old. Wherever he sat, the dogs piled on - getting as close as possible to Ed. He worked very hard at his lawn-care business but still put in a lot of his down time working in their own yard which continues to look beautiful. They always gave generous gifts and often took friends and family out to dinner.
For decades Kathy has served as the person who complies and emails the family address list (which requires a lot of revisions) to each of us so we can keep in touch with each other. It has also fallen on her to get all the family news out, whether good or bad, to almost 50 family members. Ed's death reminds many of us how that number is dwindling. Kathy always ends the bad-news emails asking us to pray for that person and those closest to them and ends it with "... and don't forget to pray for each other." Ed will be missed.
